I visit you, and the earth almost closes in around me

So tightly that I turn back at once, and it opens wide.

You deceived me with what you showed of kind-

-ness; most causes of love are deceptions.

Until, when my hand clung to you in trust,

You abandoned me—there is neither patience nor anguish.

My frail fortitude deceives me, and I follow it

Astray; it counsels me out of longing, yet I refrain.

If only love were neither severance nor union,

Then there would be neither despair nor hope in it.
