وعيشكby your life ماnot طرفيmy eye الكليلweary بناظرٍgazing
سواكَother than you ولاnor سمعيmy hearing بمُصغٍlistening لعاذلِto a reproacher
By your life, my weary eye does not gaze
My eyes see none but you though sleep forsakes them,
on anyone but you, nor does my ear heed a reproacher.
My ears hear only your reproaches.
ولاnor حُلتُI changed عمَّاfrom what قدalready عهدتyou knew وإننيand indeed I
مشوقٌfull of longing وإنand even though خابتfailed لديكwith you وسائليmy means of appeal
Nor have I changed from what you once knew of me; indeed, I am
I cannot turn away from what I am accustomed to,
full of longing, even though my appeals to you have failed.
Though yearning and seeking you wearies me.
ولكننيbut I لمَّاwhen سمحتَyou were generous بجفوةٍwith coldness
وأسعفتَand you favored عُذّاليmy reproachers بطيبwith the sweetness of تواصلcompanionship
But when you were generous with coldness
When you were cold and entertained my rivals,
and favored my reproachers with cordial companionship,
I redirected my love so enemies would not see
صرفتُI turned away هوايmy love عنكfrom you كيso that لاnot يرىsee العدىthe enemies
خضوعيmy submission وتسآليand my pleading إلىto غيرnot باذلِa giver
I turned my love away from you, lest enemies see
My submission and pleading to another.
my submission and my pleading to one who gives nothing.
Restraint is better than reproach from the jealous.
وأقصرتُand I desisted عمَّاfrom what قدalready عهدتَyou knew وزاجرٌand a restrainer
منfrom النفسthe soul خيرٌbetter منthan عتابreproach بالعواذلby the reproachers
And I desisted from what you once knew of me; a restraining voice
from within the soul is better than the reproachers' rebukes.
