Ah, my people, help against ʿAli ibn ʿAbdal!
Is it not time to disobey the dissembling adviser?
أَماhas it not حانَcome time مِنكُمfrom you يَقظَةٌwakefulness وَاِنتِباهَةٌand alertness
فَتُرضِيso you please أَخاone filled with سُخطٍanger وَتُسخِطُand anger راضياone who is content
Has the time not come for you to wake and take heed,
pleasing the aggrieved and angering the contented,
يُقامُis placed بِهاthrough it كُلُّevery اِمرِئٍman فيin مَقامِهِhis proper station
وَفيand in السَهوِinadvertence شَرعاًin law قَدindeed أَجازُواthey have allowed التَلافياmaking amends
so that every man is set in his proper place?
And in law they have allowed making amends for lapses.
فَإِنso if أَنتُمُyou لَمnot تَقبَلُوهاaccept it نَصِيحَةًas advice
فَلَستُthen I am not لَكُمto you فيماover what تُحِبُّونَyou love لاحياa reproacher
If you will not accept it as advice,
I shall not blame you for what you love.
فَكَمfor how many ناصِحٍa sincere adviser قَدindeed عُدَّwas counted فيamong الناسِpeople خائِناًa traitor
وَكَمand how many غادِرٍa traitor قَدindeed عُدَّwas counted فيamong الناسِpeople وافياfaithful
How many a sincere adviser has been counted a traitor among men,
and how many a traitor has been counted faithful among men!
