Renounce seeking amends: the offense is not just one.
He turned away from blaming though the sin is one,
And forgive time's turns for whatever has angered you.
And pardon the vicissitudes of fate for you cannot find them.

If your nearest, whom you are allied with, betrays you,
It is no wonder if distant men abandon you.
It is no wonder if those far away surrender you to captivity.

For these people are either envious or hostile.
For people are either envious or hostile.

The springs will not be unclear to you.

How often have I come upon a watering place spreading far,
Thirsty, then turned away with my saliva still congealed.
Thirsty, yet I strained myself while the saliva was solid.

How many a brother, thirsty, died in the deep sea
Of his burning thirst, while waves flow and lie still.
With his bucket, while the waves crashed and settled.

Nor separation from it was a duty to you as a child.

They are men who do not know where their houses are,
And have their keys delivered to enemies.
Nor did their neighbors recognize what hardships are.

While misfortunes gather in them the scattered destitute.

And what I endure comes from their side,
While the isolated pits give drink to those arriving.

And in striving there is an excuse for the youth if
By earnest effort; lives must have a reaper.
Endeavors become impossible or purposes dry up for him.

Has an excuse, or hating me, struggling.

By hangers-on whose best-guided man strays from sound judgment.
To me are rocky while their palms are frigid.
وَلَوand if قَبِلُواthey accepted مِنfrom ذَلِكَthat الذَنبِfault تَوبَةًrepentance
لآلَيتُI would swear أَلفاًa thousand times أَنَّنيthat I لاnot أُعاوِدُrepeat it
If they accepted repentance for that fault,
Neither can the heart be forgiving which I approach
I would swear a thousand times never to repeat it.
Nor the palm be kind which I clasp.
فَسُبحانَso glory to رَبّيmy Lord كَيفَhow صارُواthey have become فَإِنَّماfor indeed
قُلوبُهُمُtheir hearts ليtoward me وَالأَكُفُّand the hands جَلامِدُboulders
Glory to my Lord! What have they become? For
O excellence! My waiting has been long while neither
Their hearts toward me, and their hands, are boulders.
Winter nor summer has visited one like you.
فَلاso not يَصفَحforgives القَلبُthe heart الَّذيwhich أَناI آمِدٌangry
وَلاand not يَسمَحِgives generously الكَفُّthe hand الَّذيwhich أَناI حامِدُpraising
So the heart I rage against will not forgive,
Excuses ran out - no barrier for traveling,
Nor will the hand I praise give generously.
Nor the sea denied, nor the entrance corrupt.
أَياO فَضلُFadl قَدindeed طالَgrew long اِنتِظاريmy waiting وَلَمand never يَقُمstayed
شِتاءًin winter وَقَيظاًand summer عِندَwith مِثلِكَone like you وافِدُa visitor
O Fadl, my waiting has grown long; no visitor has stayed
You are not restricted in your disposal of gifts,
Through winter and summer with a man like you.
No watcher over your gifts lying in wait for you.
وَقَدand indeed زالَتِhave vanished الأَعذارُthe excuses لاnot الغَوصُpearl-diving بائِرٌunprofitable
وَلاand not البَحرُthe sea مَمنوعٌbarred وَلاand not الدَخلُthe revenue فاسِدُimpaired
The excuses are gone: pearl-diving is not unprofitable,
Among the generous sons of Fadl no miser is found,
The sea is not barred, nor has revenue failed.
For when horizons darken they are daring glorious ones.
وَلاand not أَنتَyou مَحجورُrestricted in التَصَرُّفِdisposal فيin النَدىgenerosity
عَلَيكَover you رَقيبٌan overseer فيin نَوالِكَyour gifts راصِدُwatchful
Nor are you restrained in dispensing bounty
Whence comes blame, O son of Muhammad,
By a watchful overseer policing your gifts.
While your glory in the House of Unayni grows?
وَلاand no فيamong بَنيthe sons of فَضلٍFadl بَخيلٌmiser وَإِنَّهُمand indeed they
إِذاwhen اِغبَرَّتِgrow dusty الآفاقُthe horizons غُرٌّradiant أَماجِدُnoblemen
There is no miser among the sons of Fadl, and they,
Are you pleased that my conveyance animals set out in the morning
When the horizons grow dusty, are radiant noblemen.
Bearing their loads, their saddles, and their litters?
فَمِنso from أَينَwhere يَأتيcomes اللَومُblame ياO اِبنَson of مُحمَّدٍMuhammad
وَمَجدُكَwhile your glory فيin بَيتِthe house of العُيونيِّal-Uyuni زائِدُincreasing
Whence, then, comes blame, O son of Muhammad,
Is it for the sake of my praise, or the sake of love for you,
When your glory in al-Uyuni's house keeps growing?
Or because the house and effort are one?
أَتَرضىare you content بِأَنthat تَغدُوdepart تَسامىrace one another رَكائِبيmy mounts
حُمولاتُهاtheir loads كِيرانُهاtheir saddles وَالمَقاوِدُand the reins
Are you content that my mounts depart, racing one another,
So do not sever what affection is between us,
Their loads nothing but their saddles and reins?
Kinship and poetry - for poetry is dead.
لِحَقِّas the due of مَديحيmy praise أَمor لِحَقّas the due of مَوَدَّتيmy affection
لَكُمfor you أَمor لأَنَّbecause البَيتَthe house وَالجَدَّand the forefather واحِدُone
In return for my praise, or for my affection
Do not forget what I attained in loving you,
For you, or because our house and forefather are one?
And the striver gained it while the helper was little.
فَلاso do not تَقطَعَنsever ماwhat بَينَناbetween us مِنof مَوَدَّةٍaffection
وَقُربىand kinship وَخَلِّand leave aside الشِعرَpoetry فَالشِعرُfor poetry كاسِدُunmarketable
Do not sever the affection between us
It is attested during life by Nizar and Urayb
And kinship; leave poetry aside, for poetry finds no market.
With witnesses, and in the claim are oath and testimony.
وَلاand do not تَنسَيَنforget ماwhat نالَنيbefell me فيin هَواكُمُlove of you
وَقَدwhile indeed ظَفِرَtriumphed الساعيthe tale-bearer وَقَلَّand grew few المُساعِدُthe helper
Do not forget what befell me for love of you,
I hoped to find in your company a condition
When the tale-bearer triumphed and helpers grew few.
For which a jealous one would die of rage.
يَقومُstands بِهِto attest it حَيّاًthe two peoples of نِزارٍNizar وَيَعرُبٍand Ya'rub
شُهودٌas witnesses وَفيand in الدَعوىthe claim يَمينٌan oath وَشاهِدُand a witness
The two peoples of Nizar and Ya'rub stand to this
So dictate! Tell me what I should say to my family
As witnesses; the claim has an oath and a witness.
For each person about news must be questioned.
لَقَدindeed كُنتُI used to أَرجوhope for فيin جَنابِكَyour protection حالَةًa station
يَموتُdies لَهاbecause of it غَيظاًof rage غَيُورٌa jealous man وَحاسِدُand an envier
I had hoped, under your protection, for a station
All of them look to me with their eyes,
At which jealous men and enviers would die of rage.
Thinking the planter of good will be the harvester.
فَهاتِso come فَقُلthen tell ليme ماwhat أَقولُI should say لِأُسرَتيto my family
فَكُلٌّfor everyone عَنِabout الأَحوالِthe circumstances لاno بُدَّescape ناشِدُan inquirer
Come, then, tell me what to say to my family,
No use in one from whom no benefit is hoped
For each will surely ask about my circumstances.
When disaster strikes, and no profits are sought from him.
وَكُلُّهُمُand each of them سامٍraising إِليَّtoward me بِطَرفِهِhis gaze
يَظُنُّthinks بِأَنَّthat الزارِعَthe sower of الخَيرَgoodness حاصِدُa reaper
Each raises his gaze toward me,
The man of glory is like the gold coin, and poetry a gem
Believing that whoever sows goodness reaps it.
With which the composer inlays, appraising.
وَماand what فَضلُthe worth of مَنone who لاnot يُرتَجىis hoped in لِمُلِمَّةٍagainst a calamity
تُلِمُّdescends وَلاand not تُبغىare sought لَدَيهِfrom him الفَوائِدُbenefits
What worth has one from whom no help is hoped against a calamity
No good in beautifully wrought engraving is a box
That descends, and from whom no benefits are sought?
If, when rubbed, it is rejected by the rubbing palms.
فَذوfor a possessor of المَجدِglory كَالدِينارِlike a dinar وَالشِعرُand poetry جَوهَرٌa gemstone
يحكُّis rubbed بِهِagainst it وَالناظِمُand the composer of الشِعرَpoetry ناقِدُan assayer
The nobleman is like a dinar, and poetry a gemstone
Do not rely, O Fadl, in grace and gift
Against which it is rubbed; the poet is the assayer.
On an ancestor bestowed by effort and father.
وَلاand no خَيرَgood فيin مُستَحسَنِpleasing النَقشِengraving مُطبَقٌplated
إِذاif حُكَّrubbed نَفَّتهُreject it الأَكُفُّthe hands النَواقِدُthe assaying ones
No good lies in a plated coin with pleasing engraving,
No praise but for what a youth himself does,
If the assayers' hands reject it when rubbed.
Even if many a encomium in his forebears abound.
فَلاso do not تَتَّكِلrely ياO فَضلُFadl فيin الفَضلِvirtue وَالنَدىand generosity
عَلىon سالِفٍpast bounty أَسداهُbestowed it جَدٌّa grandfather وَوالِدُand a father
So do not rely, O Fadl, in virtue and generosity,
Be to me as my thinking of you, not a blamer's assumption
On past bounty bestowed by grandfather and father.
Warning me away from seeking you, for wealth expires.
فَلاfor no حَمدَpraise إِلّاexcept بِالَّذيthrough what يَفعَلُdoes الفَتىthe man
وَلَوeven if كَثُرَتwere many فيamong أَوَّليهِhis forebears المَحامِدُpraiseworthy deeds
Praise comes only through what a man himself does,
Kinships are joined in the remoteness of your abode
Though his forebears' praiseworthy deeds be many.
And slave women bearing children relax in your kindness.
فَكُنso be عِندَin accordance with ظَنّيmy opinion فيكَof you لاnot ظَنّthe opinion of عاذِلٍa reproacher
نَهانِيَforbade me عَنfrom قَصديكَmy seeking you فَالمالُfor wealth نافِدُrunning out
Be as I think you are, not as a reproacher thought,
The attainment of one you recognize is not secret,
Who forbade my seeking you, for wealth is running out.
And does the sunlight in the land have a denier?
فَقَدfor indeed تَصِلُbestow gifts الأَرحامُkinsfolk فيin عُقرِthe heart of دارِكُمyour home
وَتَرتاحُand delight لِلجودِin generosity الإِماءُslave-women الوَلائِدُyoung maids
For kinsfolk bestow gifts within your very home,
So live in security and survive and be saved from every sorrow,
And young slave-women delight in generosity.
Your company guarded and your kingdom eternal.
وَغَيرُand not خَفِيٍّhidden نَيلُthe bounty received by مَنthose whom تَعرِفونَهُyou know
وَهَلand is there لِضياءِof the light of الشَمسِthe sun فيon الأَرضِearth جاحِدُa denier
The bounty received by those you know is plain,
And who on earth denies the sunlight?
فَعِشso live وَاِبقَand endure وَاِسلَمand stay safe واِنجُand escape مِنfrom كُلِّevery غَمَّةٍdistress
جَنابُكَyour precinct مَحروسٌguarded وَمُلكُكَand your dominion خالِدُeverlasting
Live, endure, stay safe, and escape every distress,
Your precinct guarded, your dominion everlasting.
