O you who weep for a ruined campsite and dwellings,

Weep for the Prophet's household, or desist.

What you have witnessed of their calamity suffices you,

Rather than lamenting a ruined abode at La'la'.

    إِنَّكَ فيما قُلتَهُ لَمُدَّعِ

    You love them, my heart, yet weep for others;

You are surely a pretender in what you have said.

Have you not learned that overwhelming sorrow

For them is a sign of Shi'i devotion?

Their dwellings stand deserted, and they deserve tears

More than Wadi al-Ghada and al-Ajru'.

Would that I knew whom among them to mourn,

And for whom the flood of my tears pours down.

Is it for the designated successor, when, in his prayer niche,

The sword turbaned him before he had bowed?

Or for the one whom their Ja'da killed

That day with a cup of deadly poison?

And my grief, like the slain man of Karbala,

Will not cease, however long the decay.

Whenever I recall his day, down pour

My tears, for four within four.

O rider heading toward Iraq on a massive camel,

Traced to a massive one of 'Abdi stock,

When you reach Nineveh, stop there

As one sorrowful at heart and sorely afflicted.

And there, if you can, wear the garment of grief,

And cast off every garment of consolation.

For there are places where guidance was slain,

Terrifying, their like never heard of.

So pour out your tears there, withholding nothing

Of their flow; proclaim your anguish and lament.

For every tear you shed is wasted upon

    Anyone but al-Mustafa's forsaken exile.

God, what a day at al-Tufuf! It left

No enjoyment in life for a Muslim.

A day on which the lamps of darkness grew sick

Through a terrifying visitation of error.

A day on which no pillar remained

Supporting religion's cornerstone, but was shaken.

A day on which no summons remained

Calling to Satan, but was newly contrived.

A day on which no cloud remained

Reviving Islam's soil, but was ushered away.

A day on which no banner whatsoever remained

Guiding toward error, but was raised.

A day on which no nose-tip whatsoever remained,

Nor nose of truth, but was severed.

A day on which no bond remained

Truly belonging to al-Mustafa's household, but was cut.

A day on which the vicious dog assaulted

The armor-clad lion of the forest.

A day on which al-Mustafa's grandson was left

To the wolves and limping hyenas.

Alas for him, openly calling for spear-combat,

With the cry of a dauntless man trusted never to flee.

He says: O worst of mankind, you are

More unbelieving than 'Ad and the people of Tubba'.

You wrote to me to journey toward you,

    And said: Set out on the journey, or refrain;

We are obedient to you; we have not forgotten what

Is yours by covenant, nor have we neglected it.

Yet when I came with what would set you right,

Of my grandfather's legacy, his descendants with me,

You met me with swords in battle,

    Unsheathed, and with leveled spears.

Was this in your written records,

O worst sight and sound to mankind?

Will you honor your pledge of allegiance to me?

Will you let me turn back, away from you?

They said to him: Far from it! Indeed,

You have no hope of safety.

Pledge allegiance to Yazid, or see our swords

    Landing everywhere upon your heads.

At that, he drew a sword, never having laid

Its baldric aside from him in any place.

And he wreaked havoc among their champions, until

The unhelmeted sought shelter from his might behind the helmeted.

Around him, among his companions, was every young man

    Who guarded honor—a noble hero.

How many a traitor he left fallen,

While horses galloped and warriors cried their boasts!

Until the vile one shot him—may his hand be paralyzed!—

From a true-shooting bow, hard to draw.

Then he fell—alas for him!—as though

A saffron stain or saffron perfume had been laid upon him.

After none of his supporters remained

Except as food for vultures and hyenas.

Then they turned upon the tents in an assault

That said to religion's pillar: Enough—fall!

    Striking, plundering, violating sanctity,

Slaughtering children and stripping arms bare.

They conceived in thought—perdition to them!—

Qudar's counsel; may their counsel split asunder!

What is hamstringing a she-camel beside what they committed?

O men, to the rescue against this most hideous deed!

    لَقَد تَعَدَّت كُلَّ أَمرٍ مُفظِعِ

    No calamity like it exists in all time;

It has surpassed every horrifying event.

The descendants of al-Mustafa, Muhammad, are taken captive

To please his baseborn, abject hater.

O my soul's anguish for al-Husayn in the open,

While his family was confined upon harsh ground!

Alas for my lord, the martyr, thirsting,

Driven away from the brimming sea of the Euphrates!

The people would not allow him a sip,

Until he died with burning thirst unquenched.

Alas for him, with Shimr upon his chest,

To sever his jugular veins and shatter his ribs!

Alas for him, his head upon a long spear,

Like the full moon shining at its fullest rising!

Alas for the grandson's mouth, struck

By one who will wish it had never been struck!

    O my soul's anguish for Ahmad's daughters,

Among the thirsty in the wilderness and the famished!

They are driven in the humiliation of captivity, bareheaded,

    To al-Sham, upon bared ribs.

The head goes before them upon its spear,

A gift to the bastard, son of a bastard.

They lament: O grandfather, if you could see us,

Stripped of every head-veil and face-veil!

We are presented to the tyrant Yazid, soiled,

Disheveled, in the worst and most unheard-of condition.

    لَو قِيلَ إِرتَع ساعَةً لَم يَرتَعِ

    A camel-driver chants us onward, harsh in his pace;

If told, Rest an hour, he would not rest.

The journey exhausts us, yet he urges us onward

With painful beating whenever we lag behind.

And if you saw the jailer amid his fetters,

Striking with a goad as livestock are struck!

Our plight would grieve you, our grandfather,

And the slaughter at al-Taff—what a slaughter!

They exterminated our men, and were not content

With taking women captive and slaughtering nursing infants.

Then they cry: Alas, Husayn! Is there no

    Reunion after today's parting?

You left us after you, confined and wholly given over

    To yearning, separation, and anguish.

How astonishing that the earth did not sink,

And that the sky was not shaken!

May the Most Merciful's curse envelop the band

That attacked them, and the band that did not resist.

O household of Taha, you are my means of approach

Before God, and to you I turn for refuge.

I pledged allegiance to you so that I might be with you

Beneath the banner of safety on the day of terror.

And if you forbid him to be loyal to others than you,

If he reaches the Pool tomorrow, he will not be barred.

To you came an outpouring from an anguished breast,

From one thrust into poetry to a master of eloquence.

A Maghribi, Arab in his nature

And his lineage, and not armor-clad.

He traces his lineage to the 'Uyuni house—to

The most august and loftiest house in the heights.

May God send blessings upon you, and water

The most august and loftiest house in the heights.
