O sun of God's faith, how many favors are yours,
for which the nomad praises you and the townsman bears witness!

And I have some columns of little worth—
very little—and the revenue office has a powerful administrator.

أَخشى يَقولُ الناسُ جاهُكَ قاصِرُ
The tax on them is nothing to me, but I
fear people will say, 'Your influence falls short.'

Indeed, a clash over them took place at Wasit;
I had no defender there in that affair.

And I would shield your glory from my suffering its like
where you and your abundant bounty are.

And yesterday a calamity befell me near you,
in which, by the House of God, I have no one to excuse me.

أَنَّ الصَغائِرَ بَعدَهُنَّ كَبائِرُ
But I deemed it trivial, and indeed I see
that minor troubles are followed by major ones.
فَاِدفَعso ward off بِجاهِكَthrough your influence أَوor بِمالِكَwith your wealth مُنعِماًgraciously
فَاِدفَع بِجاهِكَ أَو بِمالِكَ مُنعِماً
عَنّيfrom me فَمالُكَfor your wealth لِلعُفاةِfor suppliants ذَخائِرُstored treasures
عَنّي فَمالُكَ لِلعُفاةِ ذَخائِرُ
So graciously ward it off, through your influence or your wealth,
from me; for your wealth is treasure stored for suppliants.
