I seek protection for your glory in the name of the One, the Unique,

From the falsehoods embroidered by the ill-omened and ill-natured.

And may God extinguish the light of the envious, for

Your lofty virtues are assailed by nothing but envy.

O Abu Shujaʿ, may God watch over you—a king

So exalted that no one among men is his equal.

As for parting, its riding camels will come to us

Tomorrow, and be saddled for departure the day after tomorrow.

And God knows that I find no joy in it,

But I fear the misery of my family and children.

And could there ever be any misery for them

Like my absence from them, with my means so straitened?

Indeed, your face is dearer than their faces

To me, though they are pieces of my liver.

And a town where you are, O best of kings,

Is dearer to me, by God's House, than my homeland.

So I ask God to ordain a meeting for us,

And for it to be a reunion lasting to the end of time.
