My drinking companion unveils the bride of the cup
The bride of the cup, my companions adorn her
before us, in robes of bliss.
In robes of bliss over us

Pass her round, and revive [unclear word] that you see
Pass her around, and give life to pleasures you see
as crumbling remains among the tombs of cares.
A cure between hardships and worries

And heal with her the wounds of the nights,
Heal with her the wounds of the nights
for you are not to blame for seeking a cure.
You are not to be blamed for healing

And do not break her fiery strength by mixing,
Do not break her seal with a mix
lest you weaken in resisting the adversary.
Lest she weakens against resisting the foe

And I marvel: how does she emerge, a sun,
I wonder how she appears a sun
crowned around her edges with stars?
Crowned on all sides with stars

When your cares circle a cup,
When your worries circle a cup
stoning meteors hurtle toward them.
Missiles of aspirations hurl themselves toward it

Spring has marched to you a garden
fresh in blossom, its breeze languid.
Whose flowers are withered by the breeze

So urge the swift she-camels toward Damascus;
Urge the caravans toward Damascus
may God water her with the clouds' abundant rain.
May God water it with pouring clouds

تَراضَعنا بها حَلَب الكروم
So, by God, how splendid an abode you are!
Oh, your abode, what a wonderful home
There we suckled together the milk of the vines.
We were nurtured in it by grapevines

My tears did not dry as it faded
her palaces, nor did my wounds heal.
Nor my yearning subside

When I roam its paths
then turn aside with me to Dayr al-Hakim.
Stop by the monastery of the wise

Shaking those asleep from their bliss

Releasing the knots of organized pearls

The green sky has indeed given her a mantle,
Verdant it was, I gave it a cloak
wondrously woven, with varied patterns.
Of exquisite weaving and varied embroidery

On the hill of foxes, I left it
for there is my birthplace, and there is my Tamim.
For it is my place of origin and my keepsake

The gardens of eternity have indeed settled within her,
The gardens of eternity settled in it
and in Aleppo the fire of Hell has fallen.
While in Aleppo the fires of Hell ignited

When presented to you, you will see in it
the courts of goodness, their outlines effaced.
The cycle of good, the range of schemes

A camping ground for the base since she first existed,
A habitat for scoundrels since it was
forbidden to the freeborn, noble man.
Forbidden to the honorable and dignified

I dwelt within her, but my search did not succeed
I stayed in it but my pursuits found
in finding a man of culture or an intimate friend.
No one of morals or an intimate friend

The lowest and most disgraceful you see

Are the vile and the worthless

Will Time, I wonder, show me tenderness one day,
You'd think time will one day pity me
so I may lament what I endured to someone merciful?
So I complain of what I faced to the Merciful

Perhaps God will bring nearer a time
when the wind of arrival blows for us.
In which for us will blow the winds of return

The people of the age, as you see them

So the strong show no tenderness toward the weak,
The strong do not pity the weak
nor does the feared one reach anyone tender-hearted.
Nor does the frightened reach the merciful

Hopes were driven to them hastily
but they found only an unwholesome pasture.
But found nothing except a miserable pasture

I saw clouds so I thought in them
a drizzle to revive impoverished soil.
A reviving drizzle for arid land

For the nights have become barren of generosity,
For the nights have sterilized generosity
so do not hope for childbirth from the barren.
So do not expect birth from the sterile

Then remain what I lived with in the world as my partner"
