ظَعَنواthey departed فَخَيَّمَand pitched camp لاعِجُthe searing fire of الأَشواقِlongings
يَومُthe day of الفِراقِparting قِيامَةُthe resurrection of العُشَّاقِthe lovers
They departed, and longing’s searing fire pitched camp.
They departed, and yearning's anguish prevailed,
The day of parting is the lovers’ Day of Resurrection.
The day of parting is the lover's doomsday.
صَفِرَتbecame empty مَزادُهُمُtheir waterskins فَماyet not اِكتَرَثواthey cared لَهاabout them
ثِقَةًout of confidence بِواكِفِin the flow of دَمعِيَmy tears المُهراقِpoured forth
Their waterskins ran dry, yet they paid them no heed,
Their patience ran out, but they did not care,
Trusting in the flow of my shed tears.
Trusting my ever-flowing tears.
نَصَبواthey raised مِجَنَّthe shield of الصَّبرِpatience ساعَةَthe moment أَشرَعُواthey leveled
نَحوَtoward القُلوبِthe hearts أَسِنَّةَthe spearpoints of الأَحداقِthe eyes
They raised the shield of patience the moment they leveled
They set up the tent of patience when they embarked
The spearpoints of their eyes toward hearts.
Towards the hearts with gaze's spears.
قُلsay لِلخُطوبِto calamities قَدِindeed اِحتَلَلتُI have settled in شُقورَةًShuqura
ماwhat تَرتَجِيdo you hope for وَبِهاwhile in it أَبوAbu (father of) إِسحاقِIshaq
Say to calamities: I have settled in Shuqura;
Tell troubles that I now occupy Shuqurah,
What do you hope for, with Abu Ishaq there?
Caring not for it or Abul Ishak.
إِنِّيindeed I اِعتَصَمتُhave taken refuge بِمَنin the one who وَقانيprotected me شَرَّهاtheir harm
فَإِنِand if اِبتَغاهاhe pursues them ماnot لَهاfor them مِنany واقِprotector
I have taken refuge in him who protected me from their harm;
I take refuge in Him who protected me from its harm,
And if he pursues them, they have no protector.
If it seeks me, it has no power over me.
أَبَنيO sons of هَمُشكٍHamushk إِنَّindeed إِبراهيمَكُمyour Ibrahim
مُحييreviver of العُفاةِthose seeking bounty وَقاتِلُand slayer of الإِملاقِdestitution
O sons of Hamushk, indeed your Ibrahim
O Hamshakh's son, your Ibrahim
Gives life to those seeking bounty and slays destitution.
Revives the dead and kills despair.
O you who pass round كاسِthe cup of الجودِgenerosity قَدindeed ثَمِلَhas grown drunk الوَرىmankind
أَنَّىhow لَهُمfor them صَحوٌsobriety وَأَنتَwhile you are السَّاقِيthe cupbearer
O you who pass round the cup of generosity, mankind has grown drunk;
O cupbearer, extend the cup of generosity for the land is full,
How can they sober up while you are the cupbearer?
How can they be sober when you are the pourer?
