كُؤوسَ الشَجا حَتّى تَعَوَّدَ بِالقَهرِ
We made Imru’ al-Qays, son of Hujr, son of Harith, drink
We gave Imru' al-Qais, son of Hujr, son of Harith,
Cups of sorrow until he grew accustomed to defeat.
Cups of wild roses, until he was accustomed to enslavement.

Drinking at Na‘im and Quraqir distracted him,
He was stupefied by smooth, sparkling wine,
And the vengeance he was seeking for Hujr exhausted him.
And exhausted by a vengeance he was seeking on Hujr's lap.
وَذاكَand that لَعَمريby my life كانَwas أَسهَلَeasier مَشرَعاًa watering-place
وَذاكَ لَعَمري كانَ أَسهَلَ مَشرَعاً
عَلَيهِfor him مِنَthan البيضِthe white swords الصَوارِمِthe keen-edged وَالسُمرِand the brown spears
عَلَيهِ مِنَ البيضِ الصَوارِمِ وَالسُمرِ
And that, by my life, was an easier watering-place
By my life, that was easier for him
For him than the white, keen-edged swords and the brown spears.
Than white swords and brown spears.
