    Through knowledge our school has been built.

    And God guides us to it.

    فالورد يطيب لقاطفه

    The blossoms of its learning flourish;

    For the rose is sweet to its picker,

    فيه الأرواء لغلتنا

    And the draught delights its sipper;

    In it our thirst is quenched.

    Knowledge has shone forth with its radiant brow,

    And carried away ignorance and its darkness.

    Welcome to knowledge and its dawning!

    It has come to us with good fortune.

    O you whose radiant countenance

    Has gladdened spirits and hearts,

    With that fragrant breeze of yours,

    Wafts of union bring us glad tidings.

    A rising generation longs for union with you,

    Thirsting to reach your pools.

    بك تجلو مطلعك الحسنا

    It lies fallen, seeking refuge in you;

    Through you it unveils your beautiful dawning.

    For the lands of the East are hopeful,

    And depend upon meeting you.

    فاسق الجدب حياً هتنا

    And the earth is barren in your absence;

    So water the parched land with pouring rain.

    قد كان النور على العلم

    The learning of Islam, in ancient times,

    Was a light upon a mountain;

    And its radiance spread over the nations,

    And dispelled their murky darkness.

    From our East the light shone forth,

    And through it the West's darkness was dispelled.

    So you repaid the East for what it had done,

    O West, by stirring up ordeals for it!

    And you claimed to be, for humankind,

    A protector, saving it from danger.

    Then you attacked with your spark-laden evil,

    So you filled its worlds with sorrow.

    Then you demolished the foundations of its authority,

    And seized the proceeds of its wealth as spoils,

    And partitioned the realms of its state.

    Is it with this justice that you placate us?

    So I can almost see the East united,

    And tomorrow repaying you for your day of cruelty.

    Then you would drink the bitter draught, as it did,

    And the one who started it would be the more unjust of us.

    O ignorance, you have destroyed the homeland,

    And brought evil to the cities.

    And how often you have consigned to ordeals

    A people who, because of you, have become humiliated!

    How long must we endure harm from you?

    Were you created as a mote in glory's eye?

    We shall unleash war against you when

    The banners of knowledge flutter among us.

    وانهض يا علم إلى الفلك

    So fall, O ignorance, to the lowest depths,

    And rise, O knowledge, to the celestial sphere;

    And cleave the pitch-black gloom with your radiance,

    That you may illuminate your lands and the homeland.
