حكم الصبابة أن يبيت مؤرقا

ويشيم ومض البارق المتألقا

Love's decree is that he spend the night sleepless,

The rule of youth is to spend the night restless,

And watch the flash of gleaming lightning.

And awake when lightning flashes brightly.

يشتاق طيفهم فيأنس بالكرى

يشتاق طيفهم فيأنس بالكرى

اني وآية عاشق ان يأرقا

اني وآية عاشق ان يأرقا

He longs for their phantom and finds solace in sleep.

Their ghosts are yearned for, so he finds comfort in wine,

How can he, when a lover's mark is to lie awake?

For I am a lover's sign to stay awake.

شرقت بانجمها المدامع تجتلي

قمراً تمثله الصبابة مشرقا

قمراً تمثله الصبابة مشرقا

The tearful eyes brimmed with their stars, beholding

With its stars my tears shine like the moon,

A moon that ardent love pictures shining bright.

As youth resembles the radiant sunrise.

كذب يعلل بالمحال متيما

كذب يعلل بالمحال متيما

كلفاً شفاء غليله ان يصدقا

كلفاً شفاء غليله ان يصدقا

A lie consoles a man enslaved by love with the impossible,

A hopeless romantic makes excuses with impossibilities,

Deeply enamored—his burning thirst would be cured if it proved true.

Deceiving himself that his sorrows will heal if he believes.

تعفو رسوم دياركم فنزورها

تعفو رسوم دياركم فنزورها

شوقا ونستسقي السحاب الرّضا

شوقا ونستسقي السحاب الرّضا

The traces of your dwellings fade, and we visit them

The customs of your land forgive so we visit,

In longing, and beg the clouds to rain down favor.

Yearning, and drawing rain from the clouds of acceptance.

ولقد عفا رسم الكرى من ناظري

ولقد عفا رسم الكرى من ناظري

فمروا الخيال بزورة ان يطرقا

فمروا الخيال بزورة ان يطرقا

And indeed, the trace of sleep has vanished from my eyes;

The custom of the wine has forgiven my gaze,

So bid the phantom pay a visit in the night.

So let imaginations pass by to glance.

وافى يهز الدل غصن قوامه

وافى يهز الدل غصن قوامه

هز النسيم الغض اغصان النقا

هز النسيم الغض اغصان النقا

He came, his coy grace swaying the branch of his form,

The branch sways from the shaking of the vine,

As the soft breeze sways the boughs upon the sand dune.

As the tender twigs sway from the gentle breeze.

فجنيت منتظم اللئالي مبسماً

فجنيت منتظم اللئالي مبسماً

وجنيت منتثر اللئالي منطقا

وجنيت منتثر اللئالي منطقا

So I gathered strung pearls in a smiling mouth,

So I plucked rhyming prose smiling,

And gathered scattered pearls in speech.

And plucked scattered rhymes speaking.

شغف القلوب حديثها فكأنه

شغف القلوب حديثها فكأنه

مدح الوصي يروع قلبا شيقا

مدح الوصي يروع قلبا شيقا

Her speech enthralled hearts, as though it were

The hearts' passion is their talk, as if

Praise of the Legatee, which awes a yearning heart.

Praising the Prophet stirs an ardent heart.

شرف الثناء بمجده وسمت به

شرف الثناء بمجده وسمت به

كلم لمدحته تصاغ وتنتقي

كلم لمدحته تصاغ وتنتقي

Praise was ennobled by his glory, and through him rose

Glory in his praise, and it has marked me,

Words fashioned and chosen for his praise.

That words to praise him are refined and chosen.

بالمصطفى في الذكر الف ذكره

بالمصطفى في الذكر الف ذكره

كالفرقدين على النواظر اشرقا

كالفرقدين على النواظر اشرقا

His mention was paired with al-Mustafa's in remembrance;

With the Chosen One a thousand remembrances,

Like the two Farqad stars, they shone upon gazing eyes.

Like shining gems over the eyes.

هو موضح للبينات وشاهد

هو موضح للبينات وشاهد

لمحمد بالصدق جاء فصدقا

لمحمد بالصدق جاء فصدقا

He makes the clear proofs plain and bears witness

He clarified proofs and was a witness,

To Muhammad's truthfulness; he came and affirmed him.

To Muhammad, he came in truth and believed.
