1. اضمر الحب كاتماً ثم اظهر

    وهوى النفس ظاهر غير مضمر

    I conceal my love, keeping it secret, then reveal it;

  2. في سبيل الغرام مهجة صب

    بلظى الشوق والصبابة تسعر

    For passion's sake, a lover's heart

    Is kindled by the blaze of longing and ardent love.

  3. وردت حتفها بحب غرير

    هو للحسن والملاحة مصدر

    It met its death through love of a guileless youth,

    Who is a source of beauty and charm.

  4. رشأ في جفونه السّود بيض

    قد شهدنا في حدّها الموت احمر

    A young gazelle: white swords lie in his black eyelids;

    We have witnessed crimson death upon their edge.

  5. تجتلي وجهه العيون فيغدو

    في معانيه بالقلوب مصور

    Eyes behold his face, and he becomes

    Portrayed in hearts with all his qualities.

  6. طرّز الوردتين آس عذار

    فغدا في رياضه العيش اخضر

    The myrtle of his cheek-down embroidered the two roses,

    So life turned green within his gardens.

  7. كنت ارجو عن الحبيب اصطبارا

    فتبدى عذاره فتعذر

    I had hoped to endure apart from the beloved;

    Then his cheek-down appeared, and patience proved impossible.
