Hopes were once pinned
Hopes were pinned on you, but hopes mislead;
On you—but hopes lead astray.
Today I have no wish in you to plead.
واليومand today لاno عنديI have رجاءhope بهthrough it
أسلوI find solace ولاnor عندكyou have تنويلbounty to bestow
And today I have no hope with which
You benefited if I gained nothing;
To console myself, nor have you bounty to bestow.
Hopes are but errors that mislead.

You taught me, though I gained no gift,
As if white hair offered as a gift
That wishes are delusions.
Were locks spread on a forehead peeled.

As though a bounty, if you bestowed it,
If I missed the Nile, so you missed
Were gray hair borne upon the crown.
Praise polished like a garden field.

If bounty has eluded me, you in turn have lost
To the excellent fame is youth;
Praise polished like a garden's cheek.
So excellent names deserve to reign.

Noble men indeed have a passion
No barrenness or held-back aid is theirs;
For praise—so long live noble men!
No promise there dragged out with pain.

Their dwelling is not barren, nor their bounty
Their words confirm their acts;
Hard to obtain, nor their promise delayed.

Their deeds bear out their words,
A wasted life spent believing
Even if your pronouncements prove false.
The empty tales that you supply.

Alas for the wasted life, stripped
Do not seek praise from one who has
Of its ease by your falsehoods!
No right to commend your name.

Expect nothing from one to whom praise
To the unlucky no estate remains
Is not due, and who is unfit for acclaim.
Except misfortune, constant, claimed.

For the sower in salt-barren soil,
No yield is to be hoped for but deprivation.
