بين العذيب وحاجر ربع

ينهل في عرصاته الدمع

Between al-ʿUdhayb and Ḥājir lies a dwelling-place;

tears pour down in its courtyards.

كانت قطوف الوصل دانية

فيه وكان لشملنا جمع

The fruits of union once hung within reach

there, and our company was gathered together.

فإذا ذكرت ليالياً سلفت

بالجزع هاج غرامي الجزع

And when I recall nights gone by

at the valley bend, anguish stirs my passion.

احمامة الوادي التي سجعت

في الدوح حيث يضمها الفرع

O dove of the valley, who cooed

among the great trees, where a bough enfolds her,

ما أنت من وجدي ومن كلفي

شأني البكاء وشأنك السجع

what have you to do with my anguish and my ardent love?

My lot is weeping, and yours is cooing.

يا نازلين بسفح كاظمة

هل للزمان بعهدنا رجع

O you who camp at the foot of Kāẓima,

will time return to our days together,

فتعود بالاحباب زاهرة

حزوى ويجمع شملنا جمع

so that, radiant with loved ones, back comes

Ḥazwā, and a gathering reunites us?

اضحى مذاق العيش بعدكم

سلعاً عشية اقفرت سلع

The taste of life after you has turned

bitter as salaʿ, the evening Salʿ lay deserted.

واغن مثل البدر طلعته

من حيث تم الخمس والتسع

And a sweetly nasal-voiced one, whose face was like the full moon,

since five and nine had reached completion,

من غير قطع كان يوصلنا

واليوم اعقب وصله القطع

used to grant us union without a break;

and today his union has given way to severance.
