And when the deeds of the sons of Greece turned vile,

and they heeded neither our reproach nor our counsel,

and though we had shown forgiveness, they transgressed,

and their sins grew too grave for pardon or forgiveness,

    ولا حكم مثل المهند والرمح

    we turned to the judgment of Mashrafi swords between us;

and no judgment matches that of the Indian-steel sword and the spear.

We accepted what they approved at the council of battle,

and they declared that war was better than peace.

So they never ceased reciting 'The Smoke' over them—

cannons of fire, with eloquent tongues.

And our swords recited 'The Smoke,' and likewise

our cannons, until they recited the chapter 'The Victory.'
