And a young gazelle whose love has left me
Washadan made me inherit his love
with lasting sorrow, like the Allies.
Like the coalitionists, prolonged sorrow

Union with him was hard for me to attain, just as
It was hard for me to reconnect with him
the encounter at the Dardanelles was hard for them.
As it was hard for them the stand of Dardanelles
والكلand all مناof us لمdid not ينلattain قصدهhis aim
وهكذاand so it goes منwhoever طلبsought المستحيلthe impossible
And none of us attained his aim;
And all of us did not get what we intended
so it goes with whoever seeks the impossible.
That is the case for those who seek the impossible
قدindeed همتI was enamored بالثغرof the mouth / fortified gateway وهامواand they were enamored بهof it
والثغرand the mouth / fortified gateway ناءfar away ماnot إليهto it سبيلa way
I was enamored of the mouth, and they were too;
They coveted the lips and were enchanted by it
and the mouth is far away, with no way to reach it.
Yet no way leads to the lips

Opening it would have been a boon to them,
And opening them was a favor to them
while my wish is to drink from Salsabil.
While my favor was to return the bracelet

فكلناso all of us يصلىburns بنارin the fire of الغليلburning thirst / longing
I lament love, and they the din of battle;
I complain and they complain of passion and infatuation
so we all burn in the fire of unquenched longing.
So all of us pray in the fire of anguish

O powers whose fleets have fled,
O Dulaa whose ships have fled
as my solace and graceful patience fled!
Fleeing like Sulwani and my beautiful patience

Their blood, like tears of separation,
Their blood is like the tears of the lover
flowed in streams over sword-edges and cheek.
That streamed over the gazelle and the cheek

The gazelle has caught me, but
The gazelle has hunted me yet
a lion of the thicket from Turkey has caught them.
The lion of Turkey has hunted them

Bright, sharp blades laid them low, just as
I have destroyed them like the eggs of pigeons
the sword of a languid glance laid the lovesick lover low.
As a sword in a blink destroys the brave

I bade my heart farewell on the day of his departure,
And I bid farewell to my heart the day they departed
and they bade their might farewell on the day they left.
And they bid the thorns farewell the day they returned

Returned in love with the glory of the sublime

I freely gave myself for love, while they
I have been steadfast to love with myself while they
chose, out of cowardice, the life of the abased.
Have chosen the life of the cowardly humiliated

If today they regret what has passed,
If they call today for what has passed
then may the pardon-seeker’s misstep never be pardoned!
I will not regret the stumbling of one who withdraws
