يرجي اليَسَار لها بالقفول

لعلَّ المنيَّة قبلَ القفولِ

لعلَّ المنيَّة قبلَ القفولِ

It holds out hope of prosperity for her upon return;

perhaps death will come before the return.

لعمرُ التي وعدتك الثراء

لعمرُ التي وعدتك الثراء

بجدوى الصديق وبِرِّ الخليلِ

بجدوى الصديق وبِرِّ الخليلِ

By the life of her who promised you riches

through a friend's bounty and a close companion's kindness,

لقد قذفت بك صعبَ المرا

لقد قذفت بك صعبَ المرا

م واستجملتْ لك غير الجميلِ

م واستجملتْ لك غير الجميلِ

she has indeed flung you toward a goal hard to attain,

and deemed beautiful for you what is not beautiful.

سَأقني العفافَ وأرضي الكفاف

سَأقني العفافَ وأرضي الكفاف

فليس غِنَى النفس حَوز الجزيلِ

فليس غِنَى النفس حَوز الجزيلِ

I shall cherish self-restraint and be content with enough;

for wealth of soul is not possessing abundance.

ولا أتصدّى لشكر الجواد

ولا أتصدّى لشكر الجواد

ولا أستعدّ لذم البخيلِ

ولا أستعدّ لذم البخيلِ

Nor will I set about thanking the generous,

nor prepare to blame the miserly.

وأعلم أنّ بنات الرجاء

وأعلم أنّ بنات الرجاء

تُحلُّ العزيز محلَّ الذليلِ

تُحلُّ العزيز محلَّ الذليلِ

And I know that the daughters of hope

place the honored in the station of the abased,

وأن ليس مستغنياً بالكثير

وأن ليس مستغنياً بالكثير

مَنْ ليس مستغنياً بالقليلِ

مَنْ ليس مستغنياً بالقليلِ

and that no one finds sufficiency in much

who does not find sufficiency in little.
