أعاذلتي أقصري

أعاذلتي أقصري

أبعْ جِدَتي بالمِنَنْ

أبعْ جِدَتي بالمِنَنْ

O my reproacher, desist;

My reproacher, be brief

let me trade my wealth for deeds of kindness.

Sell my generosity for favors

ذريني أجد بالثرا

ذريني أجد بالثرا

ء حَمْداً فنعم الثمنْ

ء حَمْداً فنعم الثمنْ

Let me earn through wealth

Leave me to find in wealth praise, for excellent is the price

praise—what an excellent price!

I see people as novices

أرى الناس أحدوثةً

أرى الناس أحدوثةً

فكوني حديثاً حسنْ

فكوني حديثاً حسنْ

I see that people are a tale;

So be a good new thing

so be a good tale.

Who follows favor

أمنْ على المجتدي

أمنْ على المجتدي

وما أتبع المنَّ منْ

وما أتبع المنَّ منْ

I bestow favors on the supplicant,

And does not follow the giver of favor

and never follow a favor with reproach.

It is as if what he came with

كأنّ لم يزل ما أتى

كأنّ لم يزل ما أتى

وما قد مضى لم يكنْ

وما قد مضى لم يكنْ

As though what has come had always been,

And what has passed did not happen

and what has passed had never been.

And every person hostage

وكل امرىء بالردى

وكل امرىء بالردى

إلى أمدٍ مرتهنْ

إلى أمدٍ مرتهنْ

And every man, to death,

To a term of misery

is pledged until an appointed time.

If a homeland harbored me

إذا وطنٌ رابني

إذا وطنٌ رابني

فكلّ بلادٍ وَطَنْ

فكلّ بلادٍ وَطَنْ

If a homeland makes me uneasy,

Then every country is a homeland

then every land is home.

If one day your brother was respected

إذا عزَ يوماً أخو

إذا عزَ يوماً أخو

ك في بعض أمرٍ فهُنْ

ك في بعض أمرٍ فهُنْ

If one day your brother stands firm

In some matter, then congratulations

in some matter, then yield.
