wealth miserliness has saved, I squander.

When I was generous with wealth

She required me to plead the miser’s excuse when

Yet blamed me when a beggar knocked

the night visitor knocked while people lay asleep.

And people were starving and frail

ليس لي عذر وعندي بلغةٌ

إنّما العذر لمن لا يستطيعُ

I have no excuse while I have enough to live on;

I have no excuse, though fluent in speech

Only those who lack the means have an excuse.
