I gazed at one whose face God had adorned.

And oh, what a glance—it nearly killed a lover!

And I proclaimed “God is greatest” ten times, then said to my companion:

When did the radiant full moon descend to earth?

My eye reveals that my heart loves him,

And in the eye are clear signs of love and hatred.

And he is nothing but a creation of my Lord, given form,

Yet some people are lovelier than others.

One evening he greeted me with roses, as though they were

    Cheeks joined to one another.

And he shared a cup with me, as though its nectar were

My tears when sleep forsook my eye.

And he turned away; the wine's effect on his movements,

Through drunkenness, was that of wind upon a tender bough.
