He strolls in a striped robe to cover his nakedness,

draped over the bone of his leg.

A drunken haze from hunger crept into his head,

like the coursing of pure, heady wine.

So he wept his grief and yearned for bread,

and cried out with a sigh and a wail:

Who will help a heart besotted with two loaves,

and a soul yearning to feast uninvited?

    جلَّ قِدْر الأعراس عن تأميلي

    My soul does not aspire to banquets;

the wedding cauldron is far beyond my hopes.

Bring a dish, and tell that woman to sing:

I do not weep for the effaced ruins of deserted camps.
