He cast aside his lineage as a client,

The lineage of the Master was surpassed

and began claiming Arab descent.

And he began to falsely claim Arab lineage

فلا هذا ولا هاذا

ك يدركه إذا طلبا

So neither this nor that

Neither this nor that

can he attain when he seeks it.

Only He who seeks will attain it

أتيت له بشبوط

I brought him shabbout fish,

I brought to him luxuries

on whose backs you see humps.

Whose appearance reveals elegance

فقال أما نحلّك من

طعام يُذهِبُ السغبا

He said, “Shall we not excuse you from

But he said: Do not tempt me with

providing food that banishes hunger?

Food that takes away hunger

أصبْ لأخيك يربوعاً

وضبّاً واترك اللعبا

Get your brother a jerboa,

Pour your brother some broth

and a spiny-tailed lizard, and stop fooling.”

And gravy, and leave playfulness

فرشت له مزيج المس

I spread for him a blend of musk,

I laid out for him a mix of musk

camphor, and ʿarab perfume.

Camphor and ambergris

فأمسك أنفه عنه

فأمسك أنفه عنه

وقام مبادراً هربا

So he held his nose to shut it out,

But he held his nose from it

and sprang up, hastening to flee.

And got up quickly fleeing

يريد الشيح والقيصُو

م كي يستوجب النسبا

He wants wormwood and desert yarrow,

He wants barley and chickpeas

to earn his claim to that lineage.

So he may deserve lineage

وقام إليه ساقينا

وقام إليه ساقينا

بكأس ينظم الحببا

بكأس ينظم الحببا

And our cupbearer rose to approach him

And our cupbearer rose to him

with a cup whose bubbles form a string,

With a cup that arranges passions

معتقة مُرَوّقة

معتقة مُرَوّقة

تسلِّي هَمّ من شربا

تسلِّي هَمّ من شربا

of aged, clarified wine,

Aged and refined

soothing the cares of whoever drinks.

That relieves the grief of one who drinks

فآلي لا يسلسلها

فآلي لا يسلسلها

وقال أصِبْ لنا حلبا

وقال أصِبْ لنا حلبا

So he swore he would not swallow it,

But he refused to drink it

and said, “Get us some milk.”

And said: Pour us some milk

جحدت أباك نسبته

جحدت أباك نسبته

وترجو أنْ تفيد أبا

وترجو أنْ تفيد أبا

You disowned your father's lineage,

You denied your father his lineage

yet hope to acquire a father!

And hope to benefit a father
