لكل أخي مدحٍ ثوابٌ يُعده

لكل أخي مدحٍ ثوابٌ يُعده

وليس لمدح الباهلّي ثوابُ

وليس لمدح الباهلّي ثوابُ

Every recipient of praise has a reward he prepares,

Every brother I praise deserves reward,

But there is no reward for praising al-Bahili.

Yet praising the ignorant earns no reward.

مدحتُ ابنَ سَلم والمديح مهزَّة

مدحتُ ابنَ سَلم والمديح مهزَّة

فكانَ كصَفْوانٍ عليه ترابُ

فكانَ كصَفْوانٍ عليه ترابُ

I praised Ibn Salm, and praise is a stirring force;

I praised the son of Salm, though praise be scorn,

Yet he was like a smooth rock with dust upon it.

Like a lily with dust sprinkled o’er.
