    Since ages past, poetry has been a chronicle,

    And today we take pride in it, gray-haired and young.

    The forefathers' legacy is a source of pride through the ages,

    And a banner that fluttered with glory and melodies.

    فحبذا ساكن الريان من كانا

    With her we rejoiced the morning our company was gathered;

    So how admirable is the dweller of al-Rayyan, whoever he may be!

    And in her tears, weeping was blood,

    When it streamed down in eulogies for our dead.

    And how often we were enraptured by the recitation of a rhyme!

    A maiden who had never before glimpsed a human being.

    And their speaker said, hoping for union with her,

    Presenting an example of perfect homonymic wordplay:

    If the phantom of the woman with the beauty mark visited us sometimes,

    While we were in the pits of graves, it would revive us.

    غيث البلاغة بعض من سجايانا

    These are her beauties, evident in speech;

    The rain of eloquence is part of our nature.

    So create with brilliance, for in reciting her there is a melody

    That mingles with the soul in joys and sorrows.

    Knowledge, thought, literature, and admonition,

    Adorned in a robe of glory throughout her days.

    منها غرسنا بذهن الجيل بستانا

    We are the ones who bestowed our affection upon her;

    From her we planted a garden in the generation's mind.

    God sent down His revelation in her, honoring her,

    And the Chosen One firmly established the edifice of grammatical inflection.

    In our love for her, we could not—despite our ability—

    Keep love hidden in our whispered confidences,

    Until we proclaimed it aloud in every quarter.

    So blessed be love, openly declared and proclaimed!

    و إن نبا سيفنا فيها اعتلى شانا

    If our horses stumble, the language of ḍād raises them;

    And if our sword fails to cut, through her it rises in stature.

    No nation has neglected a legacy through which it flourished

    Without sewing the garments of humiliation into shrouds.

    So restore, O her sons, the glory of her past,

    So that we may raise ḍād's banners for ages.

    Its close is a waft of our Ahmad's fragrance:

    May God bless Taha, the Trustworthy, as long as

    Hearts beat and sand grows into dunes.
