مcompletion of 'al-Sham' خليليmy dear friend أمor حاضرpresent نَعمانNaʿmān
م خليلي أم حاضر نَعمان
Would that I knew: is he absent, not in al-Sham—
My friend, are you absent or present, Oh Na'aman?
my dear friend—or is Naʿmān present?
Whether you are near or far, the absent may return someday and awaken affection.

Whatever the case, the absent one may return
Umar and Amer are our fathers, and they were true to their word.
one day, and the drowsy one be awakened.
Are they preventing you, or is it lack of messengers?

Indeed, ʿAmr and ʿĀmir, our two forefathers,
Or are you blaming and angry with me?
and Ḥarām stood by the covenant of old.
Or estranged? Or have you been commanded to spurn me?

Are they keeping you back, or is it a shortage of scribes?
When I was sure my messenger pleased you,
Are you reproachful and angry?
I sent you that caravan.

Or is it estrangement, or have you run short of paper—
Then they said your cousin was preoccupied with urgent affairs brought by the young men.
or is my plight, because of it, of little account to you—
So kinship, love and companionship were severed

and the riders brought you that news?
Or maybe the letter has no value to the seller.

Then they said, 'Your cousin is in affliction
Branches grow only where the trees are lively and fresh.
from troubles brought on by the turns of fate.'
You see no spring or stream in the arid wasteland

So kinship, affection, and companionship groan
where the bitter wormwood grows.
amid what the times have brought.

Or do you think a letter is merely a message,
or like some of the flexible rods without barbs.
with no payment in it for a seller?
But once the barbs are affixed,

Only rootstocks make the branches grow;

as for what is within them, the boughs grow green.

You do not see nabʿ wood or split bow-staves of shawḥaṭ
and with it the coward kills the free man.
where ḍaymarān grows.

A spear—know this—is merely a shaft,
to the clan - pledges can be dissolved.
or like any other stick, were it not for the spearhead.
Know that I am your brother and none like me

And when the spearhead is fitted onto it,
would be spurned by his brothers.
it becomes a spear, its shaft swaying.

With it the armoured warrior wards harm off himself,
though few believe oaths binding.
and with it the coward kills the worthy man.

and few are the oaths in such a matter.

Indeed, the worst sincerity is that which is clothed in leaves
by love, while hatred appears beneath it.
