ألا أبلغ معاوية بن حرب

فقد ضاقت بما يأتي اليدان

فقد ضاقت بما يأتي اليدان

Now tell Muʿāwiya ibn Ḥarb:

O should I tell Mu'awiyah ibn Harb,

for what he does has left both hands helpless.

My hands are weary of his misdeeds.

أتغضب أن يقال أبوك عف

أتغضب أن يقال أبوك عف

وترضى أن يقال أبوك زان

وترضى أن يقال أبوك زان

Are you angered when it is said, 'Your father is chaste,'

You take offense when your father's named chaste,

yet pleased when it is said, 'Your father is an adulterer'?

Yet take no issue with him called whore.

واشهد أن قربك من زياد

واشهد أن قربك من زياد

كقرب الفيل من ولد الأتان

كقرب الفيل من ولد الأتان

And I testify that your kinship with Ziyād

I swear your bond with Ziyad resembles

is like an elephant's kinship with the offspring of a she-ass.

An elephant's with an ass's foal.
