إذاً تركوني لا أُمِرٌ ولا أُحلي
Had I been weak of spear-shaft, a morsel for others,
And were I weak of spear-shaft, a companion at meals,
then they would have left me to neither embitter nor sweeten.
then they would leave me, neither making bitter nor sweet.
ولكننيbut I am فَرعa branch سقتهwatered it أرومةa rootstock
ولكنني فَرع سقته أرومة
كذاكin that way الأرومُthe rootstocks تنبتmake grow الفرعthe branch فيin الأصلthe root
كذاك الأرومُ تنبت الفرع في الأصل
But I am a branch watered by an ancestral root-stock;
But I am a branch watered by a rootstock;
just so, root-stocks bring forth the branch from the root.
thus do rootstocks make the branch grow from the root.

Stout and tight-knit of timber—you can hear its ring
Hard, of seasoned wood—you hear its ring
when, in broad daylight, it is struck against green, sappy arrow-shafts.
when, by day, it is struck among damp arrow-shafts.
