نحّاكمset you aside اللهGod يومthe day of القسمapportionment وحدكمُyou alone
حتىuntil قضىHe completed قِسمةَthe allotment of الجيرانِthe neighbors فيin الكرمgenerosity
God set you aside, alone, on the day of apportionment,
May God judge you on the day of division alone,
until He had finished allotting the neighbors their share of generosity.
Until He decreed the allotment of neighbors in generosity,
حتىuntil إذاwhen كانwas قسمُthe apportionment of اللؤمbaseness قالHe said لكمto you
خلّواgo إلىto حظكمyour share فيamong غابرthe remaining الأُممpeoples
Then, when it came to apportioning baseness, He said to you:
Until when the allotment of meanness was decreed, He said to you:
"Go to your share among the remaining peoples."
Go your own way among the peoples of the past.

O rider urging on his mount,
O you who ride a piebald, slowing his pace,
when you pass by, inquire about the sons of al-Ḥakam:
If you meet questioners about the Sons of Wisdom,
القائلينthose who say إذاwhen لاقواthey meet عدوّهمُtheir enemy
فكرّواthen charge! علىagainst النسوانthe women والنَعَمand the livestock
those who, when they meet their enemy, say,
Who, when they met their enemy,
"Flee, then charge at the women and the livestock!"
Fled and attacked the women and cattle,
واللاصقينand those clinging بحيٍّto a clan غيرother than أصلهمtheir lineage
كالخالطينlike those mixing صقورfalcons الطيرof the birds بالرَخمwith vultures
and those who cling to a clan not of their lineage,
And clung to a tribe not their own,
like those who mingle falcons with vultures.
Like hawks mixing with carrion-eating vultures,

So do not let cloaks and shirts deceive you,
Do not let the cloaks and shirts deceive you,
for their owners suck milk from sheep.
For their wearers were suckled by sheep.

How many a trustworthy man, pure of heart, has said to you,
How many a trusted, pure-hearted counselor said to you:
"Why did you not restrain your brother, O sons of al-Ḥakam,
Why did you not forbid your brother, O Sons of Wisdom,
عنfrom رجلٍa man لاnot بغيضٍhated فيamong عشيرتهhis kin

from attacking a man not hated among his kin,
From a man neither hateful among his tribe
nor a lowly man, short of reach, seeking protection?"
Nor disgraced, of noble stock, steadfast?
فإنfor indeed أمكمُyour mother كانتwas مُلعنّةًaccursed

For your mother was accursed,
For your mother was accursed,
coaxing milk from milch camels and tending stray lambs and kids.
Who stayed up late and shepherded the confused thoughts,

She grew up accursed, uncircumcised, and harmful,
She grew up accursed, harmful, injurious,
like a fly: never married, never widowed.
Like a fly, neither married nor faithful.
