When I saw the red twilight,

I saw it on the horizon as a river that flowed.

I felt that the eye had beheld

a cheek, and tears raining down upon it.

Before me, a river was flowing without

    water—how splendid, how radiant!

It flowed before me, clear and wondrous,

    surpassing rivers in its splendor.

Its redness paints me a picture

    that embraces red and yellow,

and makes the night a wall for it,

and the night makes its beauty more apparent.

O flash of feeling, here I am,

bringing the heights near to you with my longings.

I squeeze the stars until I see

the largest of them made smaller in my grasp.

The oil of light flows from them onto

my right-hand fingers, which it has illuminated.

O flash of feeling, say with me

the words of those who prayed and those who proclaimed God's greatness:

Glory be to Him who wondrously created in His universe

what captivates the mind, and to Him who gave it form.

Glory be to the Lord of the universe, who set flowing for us

in the universe what awakens those who reflect.

Here, a short distance from the soil

of Buraydah, I beheld the scene.

I beheld Az-Zulfi to my right,

and Al-Ghat to my left, and the threshing floor.

Here, at the gate of sunset, which

    gave me pearls and jewels,

I closed the eye of poetry in surrender

when I saw the red twilight.
