O fragrance of glory, where is Baghdad, so far from us?

Why has she surrendered to prolonged separation?

Why has she journeyed after a mirage

That gave her nothing to drink but the poisons of hypocrisy?

Where is our Baghdad? Why has there flared

Within her entrails the flame of discord?

And why did delusion lead her astray until

Its two hands delivered her to failure?

Alas for my heart! I see those dwellings

Writhing under the cruelty of burning.

Alas for my heart! The face of noble virtues has grown

Grim under the domination of the wicked.

Alas for my heart at the voice of truth, when

It was lost to us amid the clamor of trumpets.

O fragrance of glory, Baghdad's eye is weeping.

Alas for my heart at the eyes' tears!

Ah, O abode of al-Rashid, we have seen

    How the hideous-jawed one assaults.

And we have seen the struggle among tyrants

Who, within you, have no faith in compassion.

The wound has grown, O beloved, until

Tears have grown bewildered in the corners of the eyes.

We could not walk, because we are barefoot,

And because our heads are bowed,

And because the hurricane swept over us,

While the remnants of the tents had no awning,

And because we have been distracted from our spring

By the shimmering mirage of uncharted wastes.

O fragrance of glory, Baghdad's eye is weeping

    And suffering from severe exhaustion.

Where are the banners of Khalid and al-Muthanna?

Where is the radiance of the Iraqi morning?

Where is the conquest of conquests, the day we marked

For the steeds of faith a path to ride forth?

When we led the caravans of goodness, we brought

To humankind the noblest moral virtues.

And extended to them bridges of brotherhood,

And opened gateways to the horizons.

Thus, O Iraq, you were hidden from us

In the mire of death by the madness of comrades.

They opened the door to germs, until

You came to suffer from measles and chickenpox.

They sanctified delusion and mounted every back

But the back of humble submission to the Creator.

It is as though I see Halabja quenching

    Oppression's thirst with shed blood.

Thus, O Iraq, beloved, you have come to be

Between an oppressor and a godless impostor.

Amid the violent bombardment, we saw

What the civilization of dishes looks like.

And we saw their civilization as violence,

Greeting souls by snuffing them out.

It demolishes the house, kills the child, and pelts

Whomever it meets with the shrapnel of its hatreds.

Claims have burnished its face, but

It has no share of good with our Lord.

O fragrance of glory in the Iraq of hopes

And deaths, of roses and tinder,

O fragrance of glory in the Iraq of revelation

And abandonment, of fertility and destitution,

Calamities have encircled my nation until

It has come to complain of its collars.

We have not despaired; by God, we surely hope

For God's relief after this stranglehold.

We have not despaired, for the taste of tragedies

In the path of the Most Merciful is sweet to the taste.

The legions of oppression will perish, however

Tightly they fasten their chain upon necks.

The pretenders make their claims, while truth is a sun

That bridles the pretenders with its radiance.
