Let me—with my lashes and with tears streaming,

And with love from my enraptured heart—wash.

Let me wipe the ground with my cheek, for I

See wiping it with my cheek as firmly rooted glory.

Here is the universe; I behold the universe right here,

Like a point of light kindled in the arteries.

Here I behold the horizons around my heart

As threads of longing and love twisted together.

Here the world grows small; here the expanse contracts.

Here all the goodness we hope for draws near.

    أقلِّبهُ في راحتيَّ، وأَحْمِلُ

    Here history has become the size of my eye;

I turn it over in my two palms and carry it.

It recounts the tales of times gone by,

So at times it is brief, and at times it tells in detail.

Let me clasp, right here, the hand of my dignity,

And recount the tales of loftiness and send them forth.

Let me leaf, right here, through the book of the expanse,

For within it are signs that will astound.

    بكفَّيْهما يعلو البناءُ ويكْمُلُ

    Here was Ibrahim; here was his son;

By their hands the building rises and is completed.

And here was Muhammad, the best of all creation,

Communing in prayer, walking in the flowing robe of devotion.

Here lights of goodness and mercy poured forth,

And a dwelling and abode grew pleasant for the lover.

A vast expanse in which I flew, soaring,

I pray toward every direction and draw near.

Is not the heart of life here, and its pulse,

And its clear wellspring, from which we drink?

Here all directions were opened, so wherever

You turn, the favored place comes to meet you.

I entered a noble, purified interior,

So I experienced feelings that cannot be explained.

As though I were upon a star that shone alone,

While beneath it all the planets set.

I ascended to it—may God safeguard its heart—

So do not ask how its rain pours down.

I entered, and was made to forget life and its people

By a deep feeling burrowing into my heart.

And around it, the courtyards are shades of mercy,

And branches of faith and safety give shade.

Ten minutes, like centuries in stature,

And greater in significance on the scales, and heavier.

And like lightning on the scales of my longing and yearning,

It flashes swiftly before the eyes and departs.

    نقدِّر معناها، ولا نتوسَّلُ

    It is the radiant Kaaba, a symbol and a landmark;

We honor its meaning, but do not seek intercession through it.

It is as though I see the best of the prophets before it,

Speaking to it words to be relied upon:

It has great sanctity in the sight of God,

And its worth is revered in the sight of God.

    إراقتُه ظُلْمٌ وجُرْمٌ مُؤَصَّلُ

    Yet a Muslim's blood has greater sanctity than it;

Shedding it is injustice and a deeply rooted crime.

It is the radiant Kaaba—how fragrant the scent!

And how pure the walls, washed with light!

I entered it while morning was a poem,

In its white meters a nightingale sings aloud.

So to God belongs the contentment I found within it,

And to God belongs its meaning, which admits no interpretation.
