Leave me, for you are heedless, feigning preoccupation.

And the saddle on the steed of your resolve is askew.

I cannot see you, for my tears, whenever

I try to gaze toward you, pour down.

I have my wounds, my groaning, and my tears,

And the oppressor's tyranny, and immense injustice.

In Gaza of heroes, my steps hasten

In hope, while the steps of my sufferings drag.

Leave me, for your Eid is a firework display,

In it are signs of the children's joy.

As for me, the sky above my land, when

The crescent appears, is all shells and bombs.

    تغلي عليه من الخُطُوب مراجلُ

    Eid has come shackled by the siege upon us;

Over it, cauldrons of calamity seethe.

My joy in my Eid is a praiseworthy religious practice,

And I carry out what the All-Watchful has commanded.

    فرحاً بهِ، لمَّا يُطلُّ نُقابلُ

    The coming of its crescent still brings us joy;

We greet it with joy when it appears.

And we remain amid the siege's pain and oppression,

Struggling for glad tidings for Muslims.

Joy and sorrow fashion a tale

Of Eid, with nothing to match what it holds.

In our occupied land, Eid has met

The steadfastness of a people grievously wounded by turmoil.

A people keeping vigil on the frontiers, who never cease

To face the enemy with resolve and fight.

The world gangs up against them, yet they remain

A towering mountain against which the wretched fool butts his head.

O you who ask me about Eid, which

    Comes to al-Aqsa amid calamities,

How strange! Do you ask me, when on your screens

A display teems with every kind of calamity?

Of Gaza of heroes, in your news bulletins,

Are images whose contents distress the one relaying them,

And of Hebron, and al-Aqsa Mosque, and of

A land that resists its thief and struggles.

Leave me to my plight; do not ask me—perhaps

The questioner will awaken the dormant wounds.

I will not answer you; many a question is barred by

A deadly stab of excruciating pain.

Forgive me if I say that my happiness

At Eid is stalked by sorrow, which schemes against it.

Between me and my joy at Eid in

The precincts of our mosque, barriers intervene.

A bomb ushered it to me; breakfasting

On its flames were my home and my departed son.

With what feeling, then, does he greet his Eid—

An old man pressing on along the path of wounds?

My Eid gift is the lifting of the siege, and aid

That heals the wounds—have you any alternatives?
