I know the coral; I trace its lineage

when I draw near to the Gulf of Aqaba.

Just as I know our Al-Aqsa, whose

domes my heart's eye sees from afar.

Just as I know my night, when

the full moon laughs and entices its shooting stars.

I know the coral; never has it been beheld

by a diver in the depths without drawing him in.

    ليتَ شعري،كيف أُحصي حِقَبَهْ ؟

    Ages have passed over it in its sea;

I wonder: how can I count its ages?

I wonder: does it, in its deep waters,

love the waves and delight in their clamor?

I wonder: does it know of the one who

stole Jerusalem, and what he has perpetrated?

Had the coral seen what was wrought

by Al-Aqsa's usurper, it would have shown its anger.

It is better than men who gave their blessing

to God's enemy for what he usurped.

    أقْبلَتْ باكيَةً مُنْتَحِبهْ

    O coral, these are my letters;

they have come weeping and sobbing.

You, in your sea, have a purer drinking source

than an outcast who cannot reach his own.

Whenever he makes his way to his spring,

the oppressor bars him and bloodies his heel.

O coral, would you not be for me

a companion praised by whoever befriends him?

There is salt in my mouth, and sorrow in my heart,

as I behold the writers' falsehood,

and as I behold, in our media,

    a chorus manufacturing a clamor.

They turned the sword of heroism into a stick,

and placed the horse of truth behind the cart.

Al-Aqsa Mosque is in my heart, yet never

have my feet touched its threshold.

    كُلَّما جاءَ مُحِبٌّ ضرَبهْ

    Barring access to it is the thief who steals it;

whenever someone who loves it comes, he strikes him.

And whenever he sees an old man heading for

Al-Aqsa's courtyard, he drags him violently.

Between me and my loved ones stands a dividing wall,

and a collaborator whose hand trembles,

and minds whose awareness has been stolen,

and hearts whose spirit has been stolen,

and resolutions: whenever they are issued,

the veto wags its tail against them.

    And remnants of heedless states

that see neither the thief nor what he has stolen.

O coral, O companion of the expanse,

O ally of the clamorous seas,

you will see me laughing, rejoicing,

kissing the horizon and folding up its clouds.

You will see my poetry's joy when

    the milker owns what he has milked;

when I see our Al-Aqsa belonging to us,

and Hebron of the flowing tear,

and see Gaza in good health,

    after the wound of the blazing assault;

    and see Jerusalem wholly ours,

and see our dignity and victory.

Then you will see me sailing

with my song in the Gulf of Aqaba.
