I have little, yet through my resolve I am the richest.

So I complain of no lack, nor of being wronged.

Princess of my heart, I am not the poet who

Gives with his left hand and takes with his right.

Nor am I one who heeds every cawing voice,

Who, on hearing trumpets, lends them his ear.

Nor am I one whose heart is empty of love,

And who stabs those who trust him in the back.

I learned from life's serenity and its misery

Lessons over which a learner's back is bowed.

I understood them ever since youth sang,

And stirred longings that left me wasted away.

And made seas of longing flow through the pulse of my thoughts.

So do not ask what we saw and what we tasted.

I love you—if the nightingales understood

The truth of this love, they would hold no melody back.

And if my love stretched out its hand to the universe,

Layla would not prize her love, nor would Lubna.

And if a sweeping current of floodwater

Cascaded from the mountain heights to the lowest ground,

And flattened the hills' flanks and swept them onward,

And turned them from their former hardness to wool,

And coursed through the length and breadth of the land,

And left the houses neither roof nor corner,

And left no place there for feet to stand,

And left the survivors of its flood no dwelling,

And altered the land's landmarks, leaving

No beauty in its fairest places to a beholder's eyes,

And changed it—plain, hill, and meadow—

And left the trees neither trunk nor branch,

And displaced those within it and broke their unity,

And left upon it neither humans nor jinn,

Saw the torrent of my longing for you, then

Its own reality would become meaningless beside what it saw.

And it would realize that the heart stands tall through patience:

It persevered until it gave sorrow no weight.

Thus the free man's heart rises through its love,

And shines with each beat when it laments sorrow.

Princess of my heart, do not fear—have you not seen

The towering heights of my hopes built upon my resolve?

I direct all my needs to the Lord.

How gentle the generous Lord is, and how tender!

He is man's safety from whatever frightens him.

And whoever takes refuge in the generous Lord finds safety.
