ومِنْ قَيْدِ الظلامِ بالانعتاقِ
Dawn’s radiance heralds a new breaking forth,
Dawn's radiance heralds a breaking forth,
And liberation from the shackles of darkness.
and release from the fetters of darkness.

O crescent-frond of longing—I see it striving
And longing's palm-stalk—I see it striving
To emerge from the tunnels of the moon’s dark phase.
to emerge from the tunnels of the moon's dark phase.
لقدindeed ألقيتُI cast همَّthe burden of الليلِthe night خلفيbehind me
لقد ألقيتُ همَّ الليلِ خلفي

وهمَّ الخوفِ من طولِ الفراقِ
I have cast the night’s cares behind me,
I have cast the burden of night behind me,
And the dread of a long separation.
and the burden of fearing a long separation,

To raise for humankind the banner of reunion.
to raise for humankind the banner of reunion.

You who reproach me for the glow of rhymes
And for setting my foot free toward dreams—

Why do you reproach a lover
why do you reproach a lover
Whom love has given the brimming cup to drink?
whom love has given drink from a brimming cup?

Through the harmony that all beings share.
because of the harmony among its beings.

And it brought me close to the farthest reaches
And won me the prizes in the race.
and won me prizes in the race.

It is great love that gladdened my eyes
It is great love that brought delight to my eyes
With sight of what had receded beyond my reach.
at the sight of what lay far beyond my reach,

and eased the hardships I face,
And made their bitterness sweet to the taste.
and made their bitterness taste sweet.

By the Lord of the universe, were it not for my concern for my faith,
And the wound of Jerusalem and Iraq within us—
and the wound of Jerusalem and Iraq within us,

I would have fashioned letters into cups of love,
I would have turned letters into cups of love,
A cupbearer would bear them round among lovers.
which a cupbearer carries round among lovers.

O you who reproach me, temper your reproach:
You who reproach me, reproach me less,
My love is true, and affection endures.
for my love is true, and affection endures.

One who merely feigns longing in love is not
And one who merely claims to feel love's longing is not
Like one seared in the fires of my yearning.
like one scorched by the fires of yearning.
