فلا تعجبي يا هنذ إذ صرتُ أضجر
Your mercy, I beg you—for one thing calls another to mind.
Your affection, that a thing is remembered through its association
So do not be surprised, O Hindh, that I have grown fretful.
So do not wonder, O fair one, that I have become sad

I saw at al-Ashshar a little girl,
I saw at Al-‘Ashshār’s a little girl
like my daughter Zamzam, her expression altered.
Like my Zamzam, her face changed

بعِمَّتي الكبرى غدَت تتعثّر
And when she saw me approaching atop my mare,
So when she saw me coming over my room
wearing my great turban, she began to stumble
With my advanced age, she started to stumble

Out of fear of me yet in her heart was her love
for the sake of one my heart still remembers.
A gracious one whose heart cannot forget

Then the heart's yearning flared after its stillness,
So the heart’s passion was provoked, disturbs its calm
and seas streamed from both eyes onto my face.
And rivers streamed from the eyes to the face

For play, then I will remember your aloofness

O Zamzam, if you see all my family,
Zamzam, if I saw all my tribe
I am their father, not one to be forgotten and slighted.
I am their father, I do not forget and belittle

If the play of fate made you forget your father

Would I forget your weeping when you left one evening

have grown so wasted that perhaps I cannot be seen.
I have become frail, maybe invisible

Your hands breaking and buying your freedom
