رماح القَدّ لا تشكُ

لها بقلوبنا شَكُ

The spears of stature—have no doubt—

pierce our hearts.

وأسياف العيون الدعج

وأسياف العيون الدعج

كم فينا لها فَتكُ

كم فينا لها فَتكُ

And the swords of dark, wide eyes—

how often they slay among us!

إلامَ إلى المها نصبو

إلامَ إلى المها نصبو

ويحلو عندنا الهتك

ويحلو عندنا الهتك

How long shall we yearn for the oryxes,

and find dishonor sweet?

بنا خُصَّ الهوى قدماً

بنا خُصَّ الهوى قدماً

وبأبن الهاشم الملك

وبأبن الهاشم الملك

Passion was reserved for us of old,

and kingship for the son of al-Hashim.

نجيبٌ ماجدٌ شهمٌ

نجيبٌ ماجدٌ شهمٌ

جوادٌ باسلٌ مَلك

جوادٌ باسلٌ مَلك

Highborn, illustrious, noble-hearted,

generous, valiant, a king.

له الدنيا قد اجتمعت

له الدنيا قد اجتمعت

كذاك الدين والنُسكُ

كذاك الدين والنُسكُ

The world has come together for him,

likewise religion and devotion.

لقد فاق الدنا طُرّاً

لقد فاق الدنا طُرّاً

كما فاق الدِّما المِسك

كما فاق الدِّما المِسك

He has surpassed the world entire,

as musk surpasses blood.

رقى فوق السُّهى مجداً

رقى فوق السُّهى مجداً

وإن حضيضه سمك

وإن حضيضه سمك

He rose in glory above al-Suha,

and even his lowest point is lofty.

بنَجرٍ زاهرٍ زاهى

بنَجرٍ زاهرٍ زاهى

أنار بنوره الحلك

أنار بنوره الحلك

He gloried in a radiant lineage,

He lit the darkness with his light.

حسام مصلتٌ ماضٍ

حسام مصلتٌ ماضٍ

له بعداته سفك

له بعداته سفك

An unsheathed, keen-edged sword,

he brings bloodshed upon his enemies.

حياة البائس العاني

حياة البائس العاني

ولكن للعدى هلك

ولكن للعدى هلك

Life to the wretched captive,

but ruin to his foes.

كريم منجز الوعد

كريم منجز الوعد

فلا يُلغى له معك

فلا يُلغى له معك

Generous, fulfilling his promise,

so no delay is waived for him.

به عقد الكرام سما

به عقد الكرام سما

وزان بنظمه السلك

وزان بنظمه السلك

Through him the necklace of the noble rose high,

and, strung into it, he adorned the thread.

وراق بمدحه نظمي

وراق بمدحه نظمي

ورقَّ وجاده السَّبكُ

ورقَّ وجاده السَّبكُ

And my verse grew lovely in praising him,

and grew delicate, enriched by its casting.

توحَّد بالكمال فلا

توحَّد بالكمال فلا

يسوغ بفضله الشركُ

يسوغ بفضله الشركُ

He stood alone in perfection, so no

partnership in his excellence is permissible.

وخُطَّ على محيّاه

وخُطَّ على محيّاه

لأصناف البَها صَكُ

لأصناف البَها صَكُ

And upon his face was inscribed

a charter for every kind of splendor.

عذار للبَها ختم

عذار للبَها ختم

ختام ما له فَكُّ

ختام ما له فَكُّ

His cheek-down is a seal upon splendor,

a seal that cannot be undone.

فما لكماله شبه

فما لكماله شبه

وما بجماله إفك

وما بجماله إفك

So his perfection has no equal,

nor is there falsehood in his beauty.

وكيف وحسنه الباهي

وكيف وحسنه الباهي

أؤرخ ختمه مسك

أؤرخ ختمه مسك

And how could there be? His resplendent beauty—

I date it: 'Its seal is musk.'
