فلم تنفعهم الحلوى

So the sweets did them no good,

The sweets did not benefit them,

Nor did they quench their thirst from the sea,

Nor were they sated by the sea,

ولا يغنيهم الكنز

ولا يغنيهم الكنز

ولم يهفوا إلى الدر

ولم يهفوا إلى الدر

Nor does treasure enrich them,

Nor does treasure avail them,

Nor did they yearn for pearls.

Nor did they yearn for pearls,

ففيم النفس تاعبها

ففيم النفس تاعبها

من الفجر إلى الفجر

من الفجر إلى الفجر

So why wear the soul out

So why does the soul torment itself

From dawn to dawn?

From dawn until dawn?

وفي الجهل لذاذات

وفي الجهل لذاذات

خلا عن كلها عمري

خلا عن كلها عمري

And in ignorance there are pleasures;

For in ignorance there are pleasures

My life was devoid of them all.

That my life has been emptied of,

وقد ملتُ إلى جهل

وقد ملتُ إلى جهل

جنونيٍّ بلا أمري

جنونيٍّ بلا أمري

And I have leaned toward ignorance—

And I am inclined to the ignorance

Mad, without my bidding—

Of my own madness without my control,

لإصلاح زمانِ ظ

لإصلاح زمانِ ظ

لّ يرميني بالهجر

لّ يرميني بالهجر

To reform an age that

To reform an unjust time

Kept pelting me with estrangement.

That casts me away.
