مولايmy lord صبراًhave patience فإنيfor indeed I
بحادثwith the calamity الدهرfate أعبثI make sport
My lord, have patience, for I
My Lord, have patience, for I
make sport of fate's calamity.
Am lost in the accidents of fate,
مثلlike الغريقthe drowning man ولكنand yet
بلحيتيto my beard أتشبثI cling
Like a drowning man, and yet
Like a drowning man, but still
I cling to my own beard.
I cling to my beard.
طوراًat times بنتفby plucking سباليmy moustaches
ألهوI amuse myself وإنand even if كنتI am أرفثI speak lewdly
At times, by plucking my moustaches,
At times I play with my tresses,
I amuse myself, though I speak lewdly.
Exulting, though worn with toil,
لمdid not أخلُI become free منof خبثmalice دهرfate
إلاexcept وقدand already جاءhad come أخبثsomething fouler
I was never free of fate's malice
No wickedness of fate remains
without something fouler having already come.
That a more wicked does not replace.
ماnever عاهدmade a pledge الدهرfate مثليone like me
إلاexcept وفيand at الحالthe present moment أنكثhe reneged
Fate never pledged his word to one like me
None has covenanted with fate like me,
without breaking it at once.
Save to instantly break the pact.
تباًa curse لهon him سوفwill يصفوhe become benign
فإنّfor indeed دهريmy fate مخنّثeffeminate
Curse him! He will yet become benign,
Woe to it! Soon it will be pure;
for my fate is effeminate.
For my fate is effeminate.
وعنand in قريبa short while أراهI see him
يخفhe grows lighter منof جمعهhis throng الكثthe dense
And before long I shall see him
And soon I see it diminish
shed some of his dense throng.
Before the many it has gathered.
وأنثرand I scatter السلوforgetfulness عمداًdeliberately
علىupon سباليهhis two moustaches والفرثand dung
And I deliberately scatter forgetfulness
I strew coarse hair deliberately
upon his moustaches, along with dung.
Over its tresses and long locks,

عنfor مدحpraise ذاتكyour very self يبحثit searches
I shall surely compose verse
That I may string verses
that seeks to praise your very self,
Seeking to praise your being,
كالدرِّlike pearls حسناًin beauty ولكنand yet
منfrom درّmilk مدحكyour praise يغنثit drinks deeply
lovely as pearls, and yet
Lovely as pearls, but any
drinking deeply from the milk of your praise.
Praise of you is fruitless.
لاmay you not زلتَcease to be فيناamong us رئيساًa leader

May you always remain a leader among us,
You remain for us a chief
We take shelter with you and remain.
To whom we repair and cling.
