Is my station to be in humiliation for all of time,
My status is the highest disgrace throughout time
Or is my time of glory the fatal hour of my death?
Or is it the era of my glory whenever my pigeons coo?

The heights of my ambition grew white after
My liver melted in sorrow at the excess of wrongs done me.
My liver melted in agony from the intensity of my troubles

لثبوت تكديري ونفي مرامي
Time's vicissitudes nearly effaced my form,
The vicissitudes of fate almost erased my image
Because my distress endured and my aim was denied.
Due to the confusion of my thoughts and denial of my goals

What weakens me is that, whenever I examine my peers,
And my weakness when I criticize my peers
I find them scorning my station.
I find them looking down on my status

If the days afflicted and violated me for long

Oh, the profit of my horror and the loss of my peace

I did not know fate was unfaithful by nature
My feet slipped—alas!—into its depths.
I slipped, and here are my feet in the dust

Playfulness that almost melts my bones.

A neighbor from the days to stand by me

The critics will not discourage his favors
Rather, the praiser praises him for his bounty.
But the praiser praises his favors
