1. أرى الناس في خفض من العيش راغدٍ

    وإني لفي ضيقٍ من العيش منكودِ

    I see people enjoying an easy, abundant life,

    while I am indeed living in wretched hardship.

  2. وما ذاك إلا حظُّهُم متيقظ

    وحظّي أمسى نام نومة عبّود

    That is only because their luck is awake,

    while my luck has fallen asleep, sleeping the sleep of ʿAbbūd.
