بلِّغ سلام محبٍّ أيها الساري
إلىto الزكيّthe virtuous one كريمnoble in الأهلfamily والجارand neighbor
إلى الزكيّ كريم الأهل والجار
Convey a lover's greeting, O night traveler,
O messenger, convey loving greetings
to the virtuous one, noble in family and neighbor.
To the virtuous one, generous of family and neighbor

وافضض ختام حديثي بين أربُعه
وبُثّand spread فيin حيّهhis quarter ذكريmention of me وأخباريand my news
وبُثّ في حيّه ذكري وأخباري
And break the seal of my message amid his dwellings;
And conclude my words amongst the four
and spread mention of me and my news through his quarter.
Spread in his neighborhood my memories and news

كإنما التياعٍ خصّه الباري
And say: I left longing's captive in affliction,
And say you left a prisoner of passion in the wilderness
as though the Creator had singled him out for anguish.
As if separation singled him out, the Maker

Crying for you with tears like a flood
and from their crimson tears the Tigris flows.
The Tigris river flows from its redness

لولا زفير جنان لظَّ بالنار
Those who look can scarcely see his form,
The seers can barely see his image
were it not for the sigh of a heart ablaze with fire.
Were it not for the sigh of sweet soul aflame

As though he were a wasted body from separation—
As if he were blossoms severed in parting
a branch assailed by a whirlwind.
A branch the wind of storm blew harshly upon

A predawn breeze stirs longing within him,
Passion moves through him at the dawn breeze
and birdsong roots love's anguish within him.
And ardor affirms him in the rhyme of birds

Singing above the tree trunks through day and night,
Loudly exceeding the two ages’ roots
in al-Karkh, scattering tears upon the blossoms.
In Karkh it scatters tears atop lanterns

فيضحك الصبح تأنيساً بإسفار
Weeping for Taj al-Izz's loneliness in the depths of night,
Weeping for the loneliness of the crown of glory in the darkness of night
and dawn laughs, bringing comfort with its light.
At dawn smiling as company rises

O generous one, ascending to the heights of glory,
So noble one ascending to the heights
Bahram serves him, as does the night-roving star.
With Bahram serving him and the bright star

Be gentle with your age-mate, O generous one, for he has
Gently, for your soil has an illness
an illness that the remoteness of home has stamped upon him.
Upon it the departure of home had effect

Do not prolong your travel in Shebah
distance has already laid bare hardship and harm.
Distance has uncovered hardship and harm

What good is staying in a dwelling with no companion?
What is the purpose in a house without companions?
And why do you sit among the falcon and the ravening beast?
What is your sitting between falcon and hunter?

If it is for livelihood, the Provider will bring it,
If it is sustenance, then the Sustainer will bring it
even if you are in a trackless desert or the depths of a brimming sea.
If you have a task or cave of trials

لم يخلق اللَه مخلوقاً فيرفضه

بل كل خلقٍ له رزقٌ بمقدارِ
God did not create any creature only to abandon it;
God created no creature to then reject it
rather, every creature has provision in due measure.
Rather, every creation has sustenance in due measure

Have you annulled pacts made between us?

In Karkh between gardens and flowers

And have you befriended a young man whose character you have tested,
Have you accompanied a lad whose confidence you tried
like me in character, a staunch keeper of secrets?
In description no match for me, keeper of secrets?

If that is how you are, then none keeps me company
If that is so, none accompany me
but remembrance and sorrows—my companions by night.
But memory and sorrows, my comrades

I do not sever the covenant, though the Indian blade severs me;
I do not break pacts though the Indians break me
for severing a covenant is, to me, the vilest disgrace.
For pact-breaking to me is greatest shame

The Guardian has refused to let me yearn for the love of any young man
The Protector willed none but you for the joy of my heart
other than you, in my poverty or prosperity.
In both my poverty and wealth

Indeed, I use up my days, each escorted
I spend my days escorted
by grief for you—the grief of a weary, lovelorn man.
By longing for you, from passion most roused

Thunder comes from my sigh, if you hear it nearby;
If from my sighs you hear thunder when near
and if you see lightning at night, it is from my fire.
And if you see lightning at night, it is from my fire

Whenever I behold al-Karkh's spring, I make it lush
When I look upon Karkh’s spring in full flower
with tears from my eyes, overflowing and pouring down.
With a tear from my eye, restless and gushing

For the day of reunion was our gathering place
and so it stirs my sorrows and my troubles.
It stirs my sorrows and troubles

Youth's season has departed in anger,
The eve of youth has passed, angry in withdrawal
and youth has a claim that must not be denied.
Yet youth has a right, beyond recompense

and separation has made plain my poverty in this matter.
And separation clarified in this matter, my inability
