عجماء لم تطبع على خبل
So I weep—but does a date-laden palm weep,
Mute, not fashioned for madness?
لوif أنهاthat it تبكىit weeps إذاًthen لبكتit would surely weep
لو أنها تبكى إذاً لبكت
ماءwater الفراتthe Euphrates ومنبتand the growing place النخلthe date palms
ماء الفرات ومنبت النخل
If it could weep, it would surely weep for
The Euphrates' waters and the place where date palms grow.
لكنهاbut it ذهلتgrew oblivious وأذهلنيand distracted me
لكنها ذهلت وأذهلني
بغضيmy hatred بنيthe sons of العباسal-Abbas عنfrom أهليmy family
بغضي بني العباس عن أهلي
But it grew oblivious, and I was distracted
From my family by my hatred of the sons of al-Abbas.
