Ah, for her who came to give me love to drink.

Her winks, through her eyelashes, take me captive.

O night of a lifetime—it came to me bearing her.

She walks gently, with a love that nearly consumed me.

My soul exulted at her arrival, and had every right

To glory in a heart that once more quenched my thirst.

Her reward with the Lord of the House is forgiveness,

When she turned in robes of honor to favor me.

She bestowed a kindness, springing from generous stock,

After despair had begun to make me weep over separation.

I made her swear by the lashes I used to worship,

To restore the mirrors of yesterday and the present.

My imagination was emptied of all but her, and on went

My heart, pleading with her who had begun to whisper to me.

Leave the reproachers aside, so they are not granted

A day of life in which intrigue would drive me away.

Mountains have melted, yet my love has never melted.

Even if it died, it might live through my eulogy.

The enemy sought—and his predecessors had sought—

To unfasten the belt that lifts me through love.

Their souls turned away from our serenity, and they began

To offer advice, but it did me no good.

I asked them, after bitterness for which I could not muster

Graceful patience: "How long will injustice afflict me?"

The hand of time willed to thwart their alliance.

Because my affection was sincere, she began to tell me of love.

I confessed my love to her after there gleamed

Her front teeth, in a smile that nearly seared me.

Affection embraced a heart that lived in thirst

For loved ones, while loved ones shut me out.

The nights of passion grew long, and love trembled,

Until she appeared and urged me to care for the loved ones.

The reproachers thought I was afraid of them.

Their assumption proved false, for passion is my religion.

Their ways repress the heart of a lovesick lover,

Nor did they care for affection in firmness or gentleness.

Their souls grew jealous after they learned

That holding fast to loved ones lifts me higher.
