To the lands of Najd's district came their good fortune,

And with the splendid, noble-hearted man their festival returned.

    يُظَنُّ بِها أَنَّ الشِّفا لا يَعُودُها

    A valiant man came to al-Ahsa while she lay sick;

It was thought that healing would never return to her.

Yet her health returned when he arrived, and she became

Blessed with comfort, while her envier darkens with rage.

The district's devils became so afraid

That their greatest wish was to have their fetters increased.

So, after God, we thank a crowned chieftain,

The newest of whose favors is manifest each day.

The imam of guidance, Abd al-Hamid, through whom

    And through whose might the unbelievers' armies perished;

Caliph of God's faith—whenever they advance,

    His armies' blades, through God, rise supreme;

An imam who supports the community of Ahmad,

A shade that shelters her, or saving rain that waters her.

He has favored us with Talib, son of the noblest,

Who repels the foes from our land and protects her.

O you of Hashimite descent, from the finest lineage,

They are the proud nobles, masters of humankind and its lions.

The sovereign of humankind charged you with a task

Hard for others, yet its hardest part became easy.

What the noblest deem abundant in glory

Is little when that glory is credited to you.

Who could rival a Hashimite lineage

Whose noble forebears are Ali and his two grandsons?

And O Talib, seeker of the heights, already won

By a hand of yours whose promise and threat are true,

    ومِثلُكَ مَن يُرجى لِجُلّى يُفِيدُها

    We hoped you would clothe the realm in glory and splendor;

One like you is trusted to accomplish a mighty deed.

For the weak in judgment have lowered its sky

To earth, till even its monkeys took a share of it.

Only a recognized leader can safeguard the realm,

A man of firm resolves whose edges never fail to bite.

Unyielding, so his foes have found no softness in him,

Nor forced upon him a course he does not want.

These are glory's houses, easy to build

For you; and honor's lofty peaks are easy to climb.

If the People of the House were not to raise glory,

What men in all the worlds would raise it?

So unsheathe the swords of valor, and make their sheath

Base men whose stubborn ones grew insolent from long security.

    Evil tribes, accustomed to humiliation—

Long has it been since they last faced abasement.

    Your generosity deceived them; thus

The noble's slaves grow unjust through their kindness.

They thought the realm had, to guard it,

No lions, nor men within it who could rule them.

    وَلَم يَحتَرِمهُ وَغدُها وَرَشِيدُها

    So the man entrusted with rule among them, and his standing, were scorned;

Neither their knaves nor their sensible men respected him.

Each day they brought him another calamity:

Caravans they took captive, and slain men they brought along.

Fifty of the sultan's soldiers they left

In the hollows of the sand, their ichor flowing.

Neither a binding covenant restrained them, nor a favor

Bestowed upon them, with more of it to be hoped for.

Kindness had reached its limit with them—if only it

Could lessen their tyranny and ingratitude.

They must therefore suffer a mighty chastisement,

Whose blaze melts their livers with burning:

A cloud of troops striking them at dawn with a cry,

While they and their sons are its ʿAd and Thamud.

Do not accept a little from them out of compassion

And pardon, for pardon only emboldens them.

Kindle in this land a mighty fire

Of war, whose fuel is the enemies' torn limbs.

Hold the fainthearted back, for his counsel has

Dark paths whose darkness corrupts the realm.

Pass over all men except a seasoned one,

    Possessing a resolve whose timber never softened in war;

And a man of valor, whose counsels and sharp sword

Are alike in reaching the pool of death.

The noblest thing kings send against the foe

Is an army whose passage wears out their deserts.

If you truly intend to send, then send battalions

Whose might and iron terrify the enemies.

    فيا طالَما أَجرَى الدِّماءَ شَديدُها

    Take what is in their hands, and let their blood flow;

How often their fierce ones have made blood flow!

Leave them, from among themselves, warnings to deter

Their grown men and children from corruption.

You possess sound judgment and an ambition

Whose watering places defy anyone seeking them.

You are a rain-bearing cloud, yet it

Brings relief to one people, while you destroy another.

For us, you have a hand that destroyed every oppressor,

And a hand whose bounty heals those who complain of distress.

In her present state, this land laments her weakness to you,

Hoping you will guide her with all-embracing kindness.

So show her compassion, O son of Hashim; she

Has prior merit, to which her witnesses have testified truly.

For out of love they journeyed to God's Messenger,

    Before the Arabs' delegations came.

He honored their lodging with him, and they were present

In Taybah, as the first Friday's festival dawned.

She was the first land after Taybah in which were raised

Her pulpits, and in which her sacred ordinances spread.

Within her are guides; whenever their night arrives,

Her glorification and prostration divide it between them.

Among her scholars of sacred law are masters

Who attend to seekers of learning, imparting it.

For months calamities have clung to her,

The slightest share of whose harm could destroy her.

Even before the calamities befell, she had always been

Of scant means; even a little weighs her down.

She has another grievance besides weakness and the foe,

And your bounty is a sea that never disappoints those seeking more.

We surely hope that you will be a father to her,

And that through your praiseworthy endeavor her fortunes will rise.

This daughter of thought was brought here by love,

And she comes but rarely to any save the noble.

I am not like one who speaks poetry in pursuit

Of a world whose riches and freshness will wear away.

But I love a young man whose constant aim is glory,

And you are the one who strives for it and seeks it out.
