My illness comes from the languid-eyed woman.

So give me the wine of remembering her, O cupbearer.

For she is my sickness, and from her came my cure.

Who but she can charm away my ailment?

And love of her, O friend, is the source of my wasting sickness.

So may she cure this wasting sickness through reunion.

What harm would it do her if she were to put

out separation's fire with reunion's limpid water?

Oh, what an amorous oryx doe in human form—

sweet of speech, a graceful maiden of noble beauty!

She has captured my soul and made my heart bleed.

And she made me drink wasting sickness from a brimming cup.

And she deftly robbed me with her tawny figure.

And she melted my heart with her white collarbones.

The peerless beauty enthralled me until

she put me in my fetters through love of her.

She killed me deliberately by shunning me, yet I

find all I endure sweet, for love of her.

She shot me with love's arrows until

the hand of longing born of her toyed with me.

I found no rescuer or supporter for myself

in love, save one of pure lineage.

That is my close friend, my chosen one, and my beloved:

    Abid Allah, of fine character.

Here are my plight and what befell me; so judge

that lovers' plight is not hidden.

So live on and stay safe as you wish, O my beloved,

    in joy, blessing, and harmony.
