Indeed, the hour has come for the sun of union to set,

And the hour has come for the days of joy to fade.

And the raven of separation now caws of parting,

So a responder answered that herald of parting.

Oh, how my heart burns at parting from my loved ones!

Indeed, since they left, my tears have poured down.

And alas for the lovesick one when they departed!

So they went away, and livers and hearts melted.

And oh, have pity on the love-distraught one, for he is

Worn out by distance, lost in love, and sorrowful.

    له من جَواهم لَوعةٌ وَنَحِيبُ

    And his body has grown gaunt since their departure;

His anguish for them brings him burning grief and sobs.

Day after day, he passes the night without knowing sleep,

And his heart holds a blaze from what has overtaken him.

And when darkness falls, he passes the evening in sorrow,

Grieving and ailing, a watcher of the stars.

O rider, if the two of you cross my neighbors' land,

And no talebearer or suspicious person is around you,

Then, by God, convey my greeting to him on my behalf,

The greeting of a lovesick man whose beloved is far away.

And tell them: Say to Su'da, 'Show tenderness

To a lover who will not repent of loving you.

And, by God, visit him when the night grows dark,

And an angry envier and a watcher have fallen asleep.

May the passion that has harmed his heart be quenched,

And may he recover from his illness and be well.'

O my heart's desire, you are the cure for my affliction,

For my ailments have no physician but you.

O friend, how can I be patient when patience has betrayed me?

Nor does it grow gray under the tyranny of time.

And how far I am from solace after parting from her!

And has it ever been said that a lover forgot his beloved?

Indeed, my heart has melted at parting from a modest maiden,

And my heart is lost in love, while separation melts it away.

The beloved has an eye that takes hearts captive with its magic,

And a figure like a fresh, supple bough,

And heavy hips beneath hair that adorns them,

And an unyielding heart like hard, solid pebbles.

Indeed, her beauty surpasses that of graceful, lovely women,

Just as a noble man surpasses the sons of the age:

A noble young man, ready to help, resolute, and refined,

Generous, of noble character, and cultured.

This youth of glory is Abd al-Aziz ibn Salih,

A discerning man, nurtured toward eminence by a discerning man.

O my friend, graciously grant me reunion,

For my trust that you will honor the pledge is well placed.

May you ever remain a Samaw'al in keeping faith through time,

May the breaths of happiness waft over you.
