I remembered my loved ones and the sweetness of my days.

And a past intimacy, untouched by misfortune.

My longing grew, and my anguish stretched on.

And my eyes began to weep without cease.

If only those days of intimacy could return as they were.

If only my beloved and I were together.

My heart has wandered, lovestruck by a young gazelle.

When he appears, he puts the two moons to shame.

His mouth is lovely, and his saliva is like wine.

His slender figure sways like a bough of the ban tree.

That gazelle has shot arrows at me from his glances.

Even one arrow would have been enough for me.

If, after a year, I win a visit from him,

A talebearer spreads word of us there and speaks ill of me.

I promise myself closeness to him and the fulfillment of my hopes.

Yet neither is anything but idle imagining.

I love him and long to be near him,

Though, after loving me, he has turned away.

I have not forgotten him, even if he

Has forgotten me through our long separation and distance.

Fear God, have mercy on me, and grant me your company.

My patience has failed, and my humiliation has grown.

Can it be true that my heart loves you while

You and I, once close, are now far apart?

My beloved, why do I see you treating me coldly,

And moving so slowly toward union with me?

My beloved, how long will this rejection and coldness last?

Is it not time for closeness after this distance from you?

My beloved, I am consumed by love for you.

And my heart pounds from your long rejection.

My beloved, be gentle with me and promise me a visit.

I would live by it; by your right, I am wasting away.

My beloved, show me tenderness and pity my condition.

Come to me and do not abandon me; may fair women ransom you.

Peace be upon you as long as the east wind breathes,

And as long as rain clouds pour down their drops.
