O Qays, you are the worst of your people,
O Qais, you are the worst of your tribe
From of old—and you are their basest in lineage.
Anciently and presently the most ignoble

You allied yourselves with obscenity, treachery, and
You have sworn allegiance to debauchery, treachery, stinginess
Miserliness, all together, and with baseness and lying.
Miserliness, cowardice, and lies altogether

O Qays, the spoils were secured
O Qais, indeed, noble lineages are attained
By whoever brought sharp swords down upon forelocks.
By those who raid at dusk the thorny thickets

While you, not on your deathbed, stay at home
War, and you call our fighting play.
And jest of our warring as if mere play

Had you been among them when war grew fierce
You would have been among them repeatedly defeated—a mere tail.
You would have been among the defeated, blamed

We ransacked whatever was in your abodes
The day we struck you there at dawn, like a hail of stones.
The day we overran them with spears

We are the protectors of sanctuaries throughout
Time; long ago we drove you, bent low.
The days of yore, and long ago we led you like lambs
